Well, run the tests, and run it long enough.

There's empty space in that cabinet, yes

There's a gap between the cabinet and the wall, maybe. How much? idk.

Is there air in the empty space in the cabinet? yes.

The question :

Once your laptop run long enough and expels enough hot air into the cabinet, will the gap be enough for fresh colder air to displace the warm/hot air quickly enough.

If not, then the inside of that cabinet going to be filled with mostly warm/hot air, which then your laptop gonna try to cool itself using it.

And that most likely will increase your temp. Will it increase high enough that your laptop throttles? idk.

Is there space between the laptop's bottom and the surface you put it on? yes.

But the space is usually really narrow that the fan is actually having a bit of trouble getting fresh air, that's why usually propping the bottom of laptop even just an inch helps with cooling.

Hence why I said, prop the laptop even just a bit, you can use almost anything, just make sure it doesn't block the fan holes.

Want to save space while having the laptop have access to more fresh air ?

Simple enough. Pick one ::

1. Keep the cabinet door open, maybe it will be enough for your laptop to not throttle

2. Buy something or DIY one like what I linked in my first reply and place the laptop on the wall, with the fans facing out. Be smart, don't just use double tape, screw the bracket into the wall.

3. Buy a standing laptop dock that fits your laptop, or DIY one. Example : https://www.amazon.com/ORANGEHOME-Vertical-Adjustable-Accessories-iPad-Silver/dp/B07D8PGN6Y/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3THA4C6BZYSLU&qid=1700775987&sprefix=standing laptop doc,aps,359

4. Buy a wall mounted laptop tray. Example : https://www.amazon.com/VIVO-Adjustable-Articulating-Professional-MOUNT-V001GL/dp/B08MJ7X1ZF/ref=sr_1_3?crid=N7WK95PCAS6H&qid=1700776038&sprefix=wall mounted laptop sta,aps,333

I have my desktop pc inside of a drawer like that, it’s fine.

If you're fine with your laptop probably running somewhat hotter, sure.

Me, I'd just put it on the wall with the lid facing the wall

https://www.amazon.com/YISMAN-Wall-Mounted-Cutting-Self-Adhesive-Storage/dp/B0BTPK1J1N/ref=sr_1_7?crid=3BO2N2MD50XKN&sprefix=cutting+board+hange,aps,325&th=1

At least prop the damn thing a bit so the fan have an easier time getting air.

Pretty sure most of it is just recirculated hot air, but yep, I think much better than recirculated hot air + choking

Your question was "Is it safe"

Yes it is.

Performance throttling is a whole other thing.

If you choke your laptop of fresh air, well, obviously sooner or later you're gonna choke the performance too.

Close the door, play a game or run a benchmark. Note your score or frames.

Remove laptop from drawer and put on top of the desk. Try again.

Does it change more than 5% or so? If so, yes. If not, no.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

If your laptop is high end, performance will be impacted. If not, no.

Not sure why you're returning that question to us.

Like I've said, if you're happy with the kind of performance you're getting with the desk closed, however much it is, then feel free to put it in there.

I mean.... it's your laptop and you're the one playing it.

@IkeaGnome there just telling you how to know whether your laptop runs at it's best when the cabinet door is closed.
