What should I upgrade

Budget (including currency): 450 euro

Country: Belgium

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Starfield, CoD, Star Trek online, CS2 C&C and hopefully soon Tempest Rising

Other details: mobo-B550 AORUS PRO AC, CPU-5600x water cooled , GPU-MSI 2080s , Mem-Vengeance rgb pro 32gb(4) 3600 cl18, Storage- 2x M2 Samsung 990 pro 1tb + several normal drives.

 

Hi all,

I've got an offer to get an Asus ROG Strix X570-E mobo + 5800X3D cpu + Vengeance RGB 16GB 4266 C19 for 475 euro and I was wondering if it is worth to upgrade from my 5600x to the 5800X3D or should I keep my funds to get a better GPU later on instead or should I not upgrade anything at all.

 

I have to admit that the prices here in Europe are still quite expensive a 3070 TI is still a massive 700 euro as in the US you can get a 4070 TI for almost the same price.

 

Anyway I appreciate your feedback on this

CPU yes.  Ram no.  I believe 3600 CL 16 is the upper limit of speed for AM4.  

But even with your 5600X, the 2080S will be the bottleneck in this system, especially above 1080p.  A 5800X3D won't fix that.

IMO the bundle you mentioned isn't worth it because you already have a good enough board (so that bit of the price would just be money wasted) and I don't really think the RAM upgrade would be all that noticable.

but given your 5600X is still a pretty good CPU, I'd be looking at a GPU upgrade first

A 7800XT might not get DLSS (FSR is almost as good these days) and you might be giving up a few percent performance in raytracing, but it should be 10% faster in traditional rendering than a 4070 and it gets 16GB of vram instead of 12GB which means it will stay relevant for longer.

Common build advice: 1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticably improve performance past 240mm.

PCs are one of my hobbies and I've built many PCs and performed upgrades on a few laptops (for myself, friends and family). My personal computers include 3 windows (10/11) machines and a TrueNAS server (and I'm looking to move to dual booting Linux Mint on my main machine in future). Upgrade the GPU, and grab a stand-alone 5800X / 5800X3D.

No need for the X570 motherboard nor the DDR4-4266 RAM.

You likely cannot run it at DDR4-4266, and will need to drop it down to DDR4-3600 ~ DDR4-3800.

Thanx for the feedback. so yeah point taken not worth to upgrade the system its better to safe up and get a better GPU. And my apologies I have been always locked on 2 things for the past 20 years I have literally never had a Intel CPU nor a AMD GPU, I know it is silly and I should explore a bit. 

 

The 7800XT is a very nice alternative option thank you for that.

Just get a 5800X3D, or wait a month/two because there were talks of a 5700X3D arriving.

No need for a different board. And the X3D AM4 doesn't really care about the RAM speed.
