$500 budget for cans, what do I get?

hashtagswagarino

My ears are very sensitive to treble so I'd like some neutral - bassy cans.

Hifiman he-500 if you have extra money for an amp as well, (they really don't need anything special contrary to belief)

They're very balanced in terms of frequency response, with VERY detailed and low bass, it'll rattle your ear drums at higher volumes like a subwoofer xD

OP says he's treble sensitive, so he'd have the same issues that you're having.

Why not the best of both worlds HE 400 if OP wants bassy headphones with rolled off highs? Sure they're not the "audiophile" headphones in the range, but they're well priced for what they are. Also, the Sennheiser HD600 or HD650 would be a good option for music listening, maybe more so depending what you're playing.

I'm probably not going to garner any fans for saying this, but if treble is a problem for you, why not just EQ it? I've read the HE 500 can be EQed heavily without affecting the sound quality.

TL;DR:

  • HE400: Good bass, not so bright, affordable and easy to drive.
  • HE500: More neutral, better overall compared to HE400 (and in most cases the HD600 and HD650)
  • HD600: Neutralish, very affordable, not bright.
  • HD650: Warm, and not bright at all.

The Mad Dogs are an option, no idea if they are bassy though but they are apparently really good. Spend $100 more and you could get the Alpha Dogs which are 3D printed and have a bass port.

HE-500's treble is tamed more than the 400, so I dunno what your'e talkin bout willis. 400 on the left, 500 on the right:

I agree with the 650 recommendation tho.

Thanks for help guys, just for reference, I am using IE80s right now as my daily driver and I like them a lot

Right now I am thinking of the dt990 premium 600ohm (can get for $260) the hd650($350) or jumping up to the new hifiman he-560($800) I don't know if I want to spend that much though. There is also the AKG K612 and K712 Pro that I heard are good. Oh and of course the hd8/hd7 djs, they seem to get as bad wrap on here though. Would I like them since I am really digging my ie80s or are they totally different spectrums?

I tried out the LCD-2 and HE-500 at a local store today and I can't stand the weight, i could barley wear them for more then 10 minutes before my head started to hurt.

There's also a new HifiMan HE400i (HE400 replacement) coming out next month (hopefully) that would be worth looking into.

Fair point about the HE500 weight. I had to add more cushioning to the headband and train my neck to deal with the extra weight over a longer period of time. I can now use it for extended gaming session (~6-8hrs) without issue; YMMV.

The HD650s are much cheaper than HE500s. HD650s are 320 ish right now on Amazon used. HE500s are stuck at $510. HE500s might give you more bass but it's also a little uncomfortable for some people. They are both open.

If you're liking your IE80's, get another Sennheiser. I'm unsure about the HD6/7/8 because they're pretty new and most of the feedback has been negative about them, but the HD 650 is great.

HD650 makes a lot of sense for a treble phobic person. Or you could see if you could find a second hand LCD2 within budget.

Edit - just got to your later comment on the weight of orthos, so forget the LCD2.

Definitely the BEST headphones on the market : Beats by Dr.Dre Pro

tumblr_lofpq0whtl1qkmf1k.jpg

Nah, I'm just kidding XDD. I would never recommend that overpriced junk to anyone.

I haven't really tried many headphones. So far best pair of headphones that I have ever bought was the ATH-M50, but I don't think it suits your need.

However if you're interested in IEM, I'd recommend the ATH-CKS77X and Zero Audio Carbo Basso. Both have excellent bass, but the CKS77X has better soundstage.

  • 8 months later...

I just got the new Hifiman He-400i and they sound absolutely amazing! The packaging is awesome and the headphones feel extremely premium while also being comfortable. They also sound great with extremely crisp extended highs, nice clear and forward mids, a little subdued but accurate and tight bass. I have also listened to the hd650s and the dt990 pros before and in my opinion, none of them sound as clear as the he-400is. The he-400is also have incredible sound stage that makes you feel like your sitting in a huge room. the only downside to them is that the bass response is a bit on the lower side and if you are a bass head, these will probably not be the best headphones for you.
