amazong web browser

Props to Chris Titus Tech for the recommendation of this amazing browser. It is called Thorium. Just wanted to give a spotlight of how amazing this browser is. This browser will definitely make you uninstall Chrome, Firefox, and MS Edge (not that you can, but not that it matters, because EDGE IS BETTER THAN CHROME!). All aspects of this browser are just better. Way faster loading time, eats less CPU, eats less than half the memory at startup (and less memory after pages are loaded), pages load faster, and it is also built on chromium, so all extensions are supported. I have been using this for months now, and it is absolutely insane how good a web browser can be. I don't know if these speed benefits can be experienced on high end systems, but yes, it takes less resources so just be happy.

Microsoft owns my soul.

Also, Dell is evil, but HP kinda nice.

Honestly speaking, I gave it a go few weeks back and it wasnt any faster for me to consider switching to it from vanilla firefox.

It disables half of chromes security, gives chrome full access to the filesystem, enables proprietary codecs, disables checks for codecs, and has some UI changes. It's faster and less resource heavy because its less secure and using potentially unsupported codecs.

yes read through it and look at the patches. That is where my information was pulled from.

And the only "security" features he disabled is:

Disable Download Quarantine Patch > https://github.com/ungoogled-software/ungoogled-chromium/blob/master/patches/extra/ungoogled-chromium/disable-download-quarantine.patch

Or Am I missing more of them ?

Yeah good alternative, but I'm too used with Chrome to swap.

Maintained by a single person with no credibility, behind on software updates (Latest version is M117 while latest Chrome update is 119)...

Does the supposed performance gains weigh over the numerous cons of using an amateur fork? I doubt it.

I went to what I assume is the homepage and the top highlights were a bunch of compiler optimizations... That's all their offering, something that a vast majority of users don't care about and will never notice the impact of?

It's also Chromium based, which kills it for me right off the bat. I want Google to have less control over the internet, not more. Having fewer people on Chromium based browsers goes along way to reducing their control so we don't end up in another IE situation.

@undergroundbeef I don't care if I was sold to a company, the browser is fast and it's a win for me.

  • 4 weeks later...

Here's an update :old-grin: (from the same YouTuber that recommended this to the OP)

TLDW: The author pushed a soft-core porn Easter egg into the code among other things, got backlash, and now the project doesn't seem to be receiving updates.

The dude was beyond amateur...

@duncannah Yeah I know it's pretty sad :old-sad:. Nonetheless, having a bad easter egg in the program files doesn't bother at all until I can just get my work done, which I can pretty easily with Thorium. I am not leaving this.
