Extra pins in USB port

BgG286

I want to make one of those Altoids mobile chargers. And I found an old female USB port, but it seems to have 9 pins instead of the usual 4. I've looked up the USB spec online and on the inside, all ports only have 4 pins. USB 3 has extra pins right? The thing I pulled it from is at least 5 years old.

It's the one on the left. This certainly isn't USB 3. Any clue why there are extra pins?

see whatever you pulled it out of, well did it have two usb ports right beside each other?
Cause a motherboard usb header uses 9 pins.

That's the only thing i can think of.

That definitely doesn't look like standard usb 2.0

I tried looking it up, no luck.

Yea on the inside its normal to have small spring like pins to hold connectors in place.

but there should only be 4 pins on the back, this is weird.

I assume those pins are just for grounding and stabilizing the plugged in connector.

I'm guessing something proprietary maybe since it was for charging Ipods it carried extra power? Maybe more grounds? Thoes would be my guesses.

If you have a multimeter lying around, check for continuity across neighbouring pins... might be a connector designed to daisy-chain with the two sets of wires coming out of it (picture a power supply cable - multiple connectors on each set of wires).
