Super slow response from windows without abnormal usage

Whenever I boot up my pc, windows seems to be extremely laggy. Task manager takes almost a minute to open, if I try to shut down or restart the pc it also takes almost an entire minute to actually do it, all programs open very slowly.

I've tried to check the usage on everything, SSD, CPU, Ram. It was all fine, nothing abnormally high. Any ideas what might cause this issue? It gets fixed with a restart but having to restart the PC every time I start it is not the best thing

My fist thought was a thirsty startup app, but I'd expect it to be consistent and I'd expect to see resource use that explains it (i.e. 100% cpu use or something.)

Might be worth checking what Windows tries to run (Start -> Startup Apps), but I doubt that's the whole answer.

Have you looked in Event Viewer to see if there's something spamming warnings or errors?

You can check under: Start -> Event Viewer -> Windows Logs -> System (Application or Security might have something, but that seems less likely)

'Filter Current Log', on the right, lets you narrow that down to Warnings & Errors. The info logs get pretty busy and hard to read through.

Didn't cross my mind.

I checked now but can't really find anything that could be related to that. The only error I found was:

"The server {****} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout."

The rest don't really fit the time of boot.

It's probably Fast Startup causing the issue. When you shutdown, Windows will go into a deep hibernation state instead of actually shutting down. Selecting restart will truly restart and boot the OS freshly. Asus has a guide to disable Fast Startup.

I suspected as much. I turned it off now, hopefully it fixes the problem.

depending on your system this is *very normal*.

SPECS?

ps: yeah, i never used fast start, but heard horrible things...

however,  it can still be system related, depending on SPECS

So?

To see what's really being loaded, windows resource monitor, not task manager, on the disk tab will explain slow system perfornance.

If you click the read (kbytes/s) tab to organize the list to show the most currently active disk reads, it explains a lot of what windows is doing.

I wish Linux had a tool that was as easy to use to get such information.

Windows 11 will just force business to "recycle" "obscolete" hardware.  Microsoft definitely isn't bothered by this at all, and seems to want hardware produced just a few years ago to be considered obsolete.  They have also not shown any interest nor has any other company in a similar financial position, to help increase tech recycling whatsoever.  Windows 12 might be cloud-based and be a monthly or yearly fee.

Just get f.lux [Link removed due to forum rules] so your screen isn't bright white at night, a golden orange in place of stark 6500K bluish white.

released in 2008 and still being improved.

Dark Reader addon for webpages.  Pick any color you want for both background and text (background and foreground page elements).  Enable the preview mode on desktop for Firefox and Chrome addon, by clicking the dark reader addon settings, Choose dev tools amd click preview mode.

NoScript or EFF's privacy badger addons can block many scripts and websites that would load and track you, possibly halving page load time!

F-droid is a place to install open-source software for android, Antennapod, RethinkDNS, Fennec which is Firefox with about:config, lots of performance and other changes available, mozilla KB has a huge database of what most of the settings do.  Most software in the repository only requires Android 5 and 6!

I recommend firewall apps (blocks apps) and dns filters (redirect all dns requests on android, to your choice of dns, even if overridden).  RethinkDNS is my pick and I set it to use pi-hole, installed inside Ubuntu/Debian, which is inside Virtualbox, until I go to a website, nothing at all connects to any other server.  I also use NextDNS.io to do the same when away from home wi-fi or even cellular!  I can even tether from cellular to any device sharing via wi-fi, and block anything with dns set to NextDNS, regardless if the device allows changing dns.  This style of network filtration is being overridden by software updates on some devices, forcing a backup dns provuder, such as google dns, when built in dns requests are not connecting.  Without a complete firewall setup, dns redirection itself is no longer always effective.

Back with an update, seems like the issue is still there. Still have to restart the PC to fix it.

Not sure what would be abnormal here tbh, I only see CompatTelRunner that uses the most but its not a huge amount to be a problem. Everything else seems ok

Have you tried just disabling wi-fi or network connections to completely stop sending telemetry data, and just let the system idle for a few hours?
