Hello everyone. I have an old hp mediasmart home server that runs windows xp server. I am able to access it fine on a windows 10 drive on my PC but if I'm using windows 11 I keep getting errors that it can not connect to it. I'm assuming it's because it's just so old. Whether I use the software built into it or if I just try to map it as a network drive. Both ways work fine on windows 10 just not windows 11. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get it to work with windows 11 or am I shit out of luck. Thanks

I'm guessing SMB (Server Message Block) protocol on WinXP is too old (v1?)...
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/file-server/troubleshoot/detect-enable-and-disable-smbv1-v2-v3?tabs=server
SMB v1 by default isn't installed on Win11, on Win10 it used to be installed for Home & Pro...

I strongly suggest not installing/enabling SMB v1 on your Win11 PC.
Actually, I strongly suggest not having Win XP on your network 😆, I would not waste time on trying to put SMB v2 on XP... as that would only patch one of many security issues.

It seems that the HP MediaSmart servers were marketed through 2007~2009, and it can be confidently assumed that they came with 64-bit processors, meaning they are very likely to be compatible for 64-bit Windows 7, Windows Small Business Server 2011, or even Windows 10. All you need is just to re-install the system.

Alternatively, Linux could be considered for better performance, and it's also compatible with Samba & existing NTFS partitions on the hard drives.🤔

Yes that seems right. Like I said I know it's old. To bad there isn't a way to install a Linux server distro onto the server itself. All of the drives show healthy in the mediasmart hub. Just really don't want to stop using it since it works just fine. It's great for storing media and random things on it. The only important stuff I have on it are pictures of my kids and family .

If you want to upgrade to something similar but more modern, HP’s MicroServer boxes aren’t too expensive on the used market. They’ll definitely run OSes like TrueNAS or Unraid.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.
