PC not posting after new CPU.

Go to solution Solved by TetraSky,

Needs to update the bios 100%

My friend just bought a Ryzen 7 5800X to replace his Ryzen 5 2600. I was helping him install it over discord, and so far we can't get it to post.

I had him make absolutely sure the CPU was correctly socketed and the cooler was firmly and securely attached, and we've tried popping the CMOS battery out, jumping the pins, and putting it back in. No immediately apparent damage to pins or anything either. I'm thinking it may just have to be a BIOS update at this point because going from a 2600 to a 5800X is a couple generations, but I just wanted to ask and make sure we're not missing anything obvious.

Motherboard is a Gigabyte B450 Aorus M and he has 32 gigs of DDR4 (dual channel, not sure on exact speeds and timings). Thanks for the help.

Agreed, when B450 was first released it was with Zen+ support (only Zen and Zen+ are supported in BIOS version: F1 on the CPU support page), so if your friend never updated the BIOS it is way behind. From a quick look, it appears that they require F60 or later, released in March, 2021.

I appreciate the help. I was pretty sure that where we were at I just want some second opinions. I've actually personally haven't ever done a BIOS update because I upgrade hardware pretty regularly, but I read somewhere some motherboard have a way to install BIOS updates without booting into windows. Does it look like his motherboard has that feature, or are we just going to have to reinstall the other CPU and update it in windows?

And should we just go with the latest BIOS version from here?

It does not look like this motherboard supports BIOS FLASHBACK without a CPU installed.
You can check this as well at the back of the board if it has a USB port labled BIOS and a BIOS button ( small button ) that one has to press.  From what I see, it does not have this.

Old CPU has to be installed, updating to the latest BIOS will work 🙂

If you need any help or have further questions you can tag me here or DM me as well.

Unfortunately this feature (usually referred to as flashback) is not common on B450 boards. The B550 Aorus M has it (Q Flash Plus), but I believe the B450 Aorus M does not.

Yes.

It doesn't support bios flashback (like my motherboard), but you can update the bios through the BIOS itself. You just need a usb drive formatted in FAT32 with the bios file on it.
You will need to reinstall the old CPU to do this, though.

So we formatted a flash drive to be FAT32 and allocated 32 gigs exactly, we downloaded the latest BIOS update from the Gigabyte website for his motherboard and put it on the flash drive, we got into the BIOS and clicked "update BIOS", the file was shown there but when we selected it and hit next/double clicked it we kept getting a "Can't read file" popup :old-sad:

Currently trying to workout if we missed a step somewhere. Really appreciate the help, this is pretty frustrating.

Make sure the BIOS firmware is NOT in a zipped folder, or within a folder on the USB flash drive.

Copy just the standalone BIOS file onto the flash drive.

Also, I would also recommend that you grab one of the newer BIOS files, since it contains the latest stability improvements, and security patches.

BIOS version F60 is already... 15 versions behind the latest...

He got the CPU installed and we successfully booted, it was definitely the BIOS being out of date. Everything is good now. Appreciate the help so much friends thank you.

Fantastic new! Awesome 😄 I would also recommend downloading the newest chipset drivers as it seems he hasn't done any updating at all.

Sorry for the dimm picture, I am using a program to dimm my screen a few hours before bed and it affects everything.
