Upgrade GPU into a old Build

Go to solution Solved by Dukesilver27-,

CP2077 is very CPU intensive or not optimized enough.

RX 6800 is a decently powerful GPU, whereas 1700X is just slow for today's standard. Mid settings or not, the main issue is it is an open world RPG, which usually are quite heavy on the CPU.

I can't estimate the bottleneck, but if I have to guess, in 1080p max settings (w/o RT), I'd say 80% GPU usage is the maximum you could achieve, it's also possible to have stuttering.

How could I say that? Well, I have i5-12400 and 6800 XT, playing in 1440p, max settings with RT and FSR2 Quality mode, when RT is off, my GPU could not achieve 95-100% usage. 12400 is about 30% faster than 1700X.

If you keep 1700X, the highest GPU I'd go for is RX 6600, even then it would be a bit bottlenecked by the PCIE GEN 3 of 1700X, RX 6600 is gen 4x8.

Looking for some advise. wanting to upgrade my computer to run higher setting on my Quest2 VR. Looking on upgrading AMD GPU ( rx6000, rx7000 series), but concerned my computer might have out-of-date component. any advise? Budget $600.00

For VR, your CPU will also be a good upgrade since you need high frame rates. A used Ryzen 7 3700X would be a big jump, combined with an RX 6600 or 6600 XT you would be looking at a pretty good setup.

How fast is your ram?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

pretty decent for a Ryzen based system. However, keep in mind that with a newer Ryzen CPU, you get the benefit of a better memory controller, and if you want, you can try an overclock on the memory.

If your RAM is close to 3200 CL16, then this would be a great upgrade, assuming it is $600 US.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/89LqJM

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600 3.5 GHz 6-Core Processor  ($149.00 @ Amazon)
Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive  ($49.99 @ B&H)
Video Card: XFX Speedster SWFT 319 Radeon RX 6800 16 GB Video Card  ($399.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $598.98

Occassionaly visits the forum when I have nothing to do at work.

what would happen if I keep my CPU and just upgrade the GPU. NOTE. I would like to play racing sim game and games like cyberpunk 2077 on at least MID setting ?

Just drop in a used 5600(x), theyre usually around 80-100$

Now that leaves 500$ for the gpu

400-500$ will get you a used 6800xt/6900xt or 3080(ti), buying new last gen is pretty stupid when used offers some massive discounts, id say the only new gpu worth your time would be a 4070 which are around 550$ cause even if theyre a tad worse than a 6800xt atleast you get some really good power efficiency
