Looking for some info about UPS

Hello everyone!

My old UPS isn't enough powerful anymore and can't sustain my new configuration (it's quite BIG, dual monitor rendering station with DAS, touch macro pad and a lot of other stuff)

Doing a rough calculation I guessed I need at least 900VA in order to have about three minute so save my work in case of blackout.

BUT! My new PSU got Active PFC and somewhere I've read that I must use an UPS with "Pure sinusoidal wave form" otherwise my PSU will freak out and shut down everything to avoid damage.

It's really a must to have pure wave form?

My rig:

Case: Chieftec CI-01B-OP "The Cube"

Motherboard: Gigabyte B450M DS3H Rev.1

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X

Cooler: ThermalRight Assassin King 120 SE with TF-4 Thermal paste

GPU: NVidia RTX 2070 Super Blower Style (HP OEM)

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 2x16

PSU: Itek BD700 DC-to-DC

From just that, it sounds like you'd be much happier with something like the CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD. 1500VA, Pure Sine Wave, good software. I picked it up for roughly $220 on Newegg. 

 

If you're in the US, that's the model number. It varies a bit between regions.

i run all my active pfc power supplies off stepped approximation UPS'es, and i havent had issues.

 

having that said, make sure you buy a ups with a 24 volt battery, it's a huge boost to runtime and battery lifespan over the ones with just a 12 volt battery.

(the 24 volt ones have two batteries in series)

I'll keep it in mind, thanks! The price sounds reasonable but I guess I'll go for a smaller form factor model, hoping this brand have one. I'll check it now.

Thanks for the tips! Many 1000+VA UPS already have two batteries, so it's easy to follow your advice.

So all the fuss about the "Active PFC + Simulated Wave = Disaster" is just... Fuss? 🤔

i mean.. my power supplies defenately dont sound happy while running off the UPSes, but i havent had any issues.

Ah, in this case, better  stick to the plan and look for pure wave. 😅

Just a last question then I have all the info I need: If I disconnect the UPS from the wall plug, for example, during night when the PC is off and plug it back on morning, it gets damaged?

I don't like the idea of it consuming power for just waiting me to turn it on.

it consumes power to keep the lead-acid battery charged, just straight up disconnecting it essentially emulates a power outage, so you want to turn it off before unplugging it. but with it turned off i doubt it's consuming any worthwhile power.

Yes, of course I would turn it off before disconnecting it.
