Is repasting a used GPU a good idea?

Brady AKA MrHoot2000

I saw a used 3070 on eBay for around $260 USD, but it is a blower card (think Vega 64). I have heard that cards like that are a bit lacking when it comes to thermals, so would tearing apart and replacing the thermal pads and repasting the card be worth the risk?

I really hate chemistry.

Not worth it at all having a blower-cooled GPU in my opinion. Usually they are noticeably louder than dual or triple fan.

Repasting might lower couple of degrees the temps, but probably not enough to make a radical difference.

There is minimal risk if you know what you are doing. The question is, how much risk is there due to your skill level? Is this risk level worth it to you? If so, do it now, if not, wait until it is necessary then risk it.

good purchase if you and everyone in your house is hearing impaired or you reall want to annoy everyone. These cards sound like a rebooting server 😄

it's not a bad idea, making sure that the heatsink is clean and fresh thermal paste is better than what you would have on it.

you don't have to listen to all the people saying those cards are bad, just make sure your price is better than any non-blower card you can get your paws on.

like linus says: there is no bad product, there is only badly priced products

I checked, the lowest priced non-blower is around $280, while the cheapest blower card is $250

Have you ever owned a modern GPU with a blower-style cooler? If no, then trust me $30 is worth it to spend extra for non-blower card.

As I'm sure multiple people have mentioned blower style cards tend to be a lot louder the last blower style I owned was a 980ti founders and that thing sounded like a jet fighter taking off with full afterburner engaged
