Can I use the OEM disc to install W7 on my machine but use a different OEM activation code. I have not changed my motherboard.

You can but you will need to call Microsoft.

And ask what. And for what reason.

P.O.P.

Automated call last time I did it. Some robot somewhere didn't speak to (or want to speak to) a human.

I downloaded and burned an.iso from

http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/

and used the activation code on the COA from the side of the tower

Usually OEM keys are tied to the MOBO and if you want to install a new key you need to call the Microsoft CC to enable you to make this change.

No I don't think you understand what I am doing. The activation code that I am still using is tied to the mobo I am still using. The mobo won't be changing. The only thing that is changing is that I am getting an SSD and I am reinstalling W7 onto the SSD. I just wanted to know if I use the OEM disc from another build will the disc work on a different OEM machine.

So will you be using this new SSD in the current build?

What yea. I am only changing my RAID 0 array to a single SSD. My HDD's are really loud so I want to go for something less annoying. The SSD will go into my current build but the OEM disc comes from a different build I did in the past. I just want to know if the disc is somehow tied to the other build. I will use the same activation key I used for my current build. That key is also OEM.

And ask what. And for what reason.

After a few days there will be a message comes up saying (paraphrased) "this copy of Windows cannot be automatically activated" and it will display a HUGE number.  This you type in on the phone when you have telephoned the Tel No given.  The phone will then give you a number to type back in to your system activating your copy of Windows .  As long as your key hasn't been used a bajjilion times in the last couple of days this is pretty much always all automatic.

If by some unlucky chance you actually get a human make sure you say you are re-installing cos the old hard drive died not because you have moved to a new system, for OEM copies repairs are pretty much okay but upgrades are a no-no, obviouslly the person at the other end of the 'phone can't tell what state your "old" hard drive is in.  99.99999% chance it is the automated system though.

It doesn't matter what OEM disk you use to install the OS as long as you use the same Key, you will not face any problem. Hope this has answered your question.
