Did Linus actually have a sponsor relationship with one of those sites like that? It must have been a while ago.

The thing is that those sites are operating in a legal gray area which forum rules prohibit us from helping with you with.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

If its an older video with that sponsor then I doubt that code still works. I can't remember Linus ever using such a sponsor.  We are not allowed to help you with 3rd party websites selling windows keys as this is agains forum rules.

If you have another computer on your Microsoft account, you can simply use the "I changed hardware" option and practically reuse a key. There's a couple of activations available in each license.

Otherwise, I'd personally stay away from those OEM licenses in 2023 and just opt for a legit full cost version from the Microsoft Store.

 Is this the video???

My personal experience:

I did use a cheap $15 key a couple of times. But the last time I did on my new build the thing just kept crashing. It turned out I had a bad CPU. But by that point I had replaced every other part of the computer trying to pinpoint the problem. I had even changed out the motherboard (thanks to free replacements!) Anywho, in the end the key no longer worked as it was linked to the motherboard and CPU, and now I had new ones that were different.

So I don't use those cheap activation keys anymore. So far I've bought a few valid Windows activation keys from Microsoft for my various computers with the intent of keeping track of them and transfering them over to my new computers as long as Microsoft allows it.

  • 1 month later...

Do you guys realize that you can activate your motherboard forever using HWID while spending 0 dollar?

It's a simple PowerShell command that you can easily find on Google/GitHub, I won't post the link because that's maybe not authorized on this forum and I am lazy to check but you just have to type "windows activation GitHub" on google and that's the first GitHub link from a big "massive gravel" man, I can't believe that many people related to tech like a LTT forum user is not aware of that and that Linus in his last WAN Show does not at least involve it... And NO, this is NOT a .dll or a .exe that has to run 24/7 on your PC, it's a legitimate activation through Microsoft servers, meaning that if you format & reinstall Windows will still be activated.

You are talking about KMS activation most likely. In which case, yes its legit. But only for Enterprise users. For others, its same thing as pirating the whole thing. You are supposed to pay for the commercial stuff you use daily.

This method is technically piracy.

HWID is a method that uses hardware identification to see if a particular system hardware has a license applied to it.

This is normally used by manufacturers so their oem keys don't need to be provided and are tied to the machine.

These activation methods take advantage of a loophole to create a false entry and activate it like that through submission to that database as an oem license.

So Microsoft would see it as legitimate but the way of obtaining it is not and is against their terms of service.
