Lightbulb should blink when I get a message

Julian Ewald

Hey folks,

I want to smartify my home a bit to aviod some inconveniences.

The first Problem is that I sometimes just don't notice when I get a message or someone is at the door. I have already some stuff that is compatible with google home so it would be nice if the solution would work with google home.

My idea was a smart light (phillips hue or whatever) that blinks in a certain color when someone is at the door or I get a message on my phone.

Is this possible? And if so what would I need?

Couldn't you just put a motion detector outside and have it connect to a smart light to turn on?

Depends on the type of sensor you have for the front door.

Open source? Probably possible

Open API? Maybe

No API Access or closed service? No chance - you should just look into a motion detector/light combo like the other guy said

AMD 3600x, 16GB DDR4 3200MHz CL14, GTX 1080, and Ungodly Amounts of Storage

This is the smart-dumb way of doing it, which'll likely be more reliable, assuming you've done it right. Simply involve a proximity sensor with a logical 1, then have that wired as a switch to a lightbulb.

If you know what the trigger is that the message/door sensor is using, you can create a custom prompt in Home. If the trigger is an "on/off" trigger something like "when message box triggered, turn on message light, color red" Home has some great potential for custom prompts, you just need to know what format it wants.

(Mine sometimes wants "*room* light off" and sometimes "turn off *room* light")
