I recently went to upgrade my 5600X to a 5900X and I can't get bios code 99. I've tried booting with one gpu, with only the boot drive attached, checked all the cables, cleared CMOS ( button and removed battery), and 3-4 different bios versions. Every time the 5600X will boot just fine, the 5900X will not. I tried the 5900X in another motherboard and it booted first try. Exchanged the 5900X and got another one and it still gets stuck on the same code.

Is there anything else left to try/does anyone have any thought on what is going wrong. On the display it will show the Aorus splash screen and will not let me into bios, will just go to the "American Megatrends" splash screen, but gets stuck without any text under it, whether I try to go into bios or let it boot.

Specs

CPU: 5900X

Mobo: X570S Aorus Master

GPU: 3080x2 + 3090

32gb of ddr4 3600 (Gskill Royal)

PSU: 1600 watts

Edit:
If you have this issue, just try the Q-Flash Plus first. It worked for me (even with the same BIOS version i started with).

Welcome to the forums!!!

Clear CMOS when you swap CPUs? You did this already never mind.

Unplug any unnecessary peripherals plugged into the motherboard to see if you can get it to POST.

I found a few threads on the Internet with similar issues, but nothing really helpful. It is sometimes a bad CPU, sometimes a bad motherboard and most of the time the issue gets unresolved.

First thing, I'd contact Gigabyte's support to see if they know what is going on. Maybe they have a solution.

Why the switch from one 5600X to two 5600X glued together? Productivity, rendering?

5150MHz on the 5900X is faster than 4850MHz on the 5600X 😄

5900X is a beast. At stock its kinda sucky though.

Well, I asked the author of the thread.

I know very well what a 5900X, had it on my system till about 2 months ago. Replaced it with the 5800X3D and now it sits in a box.

I run it for game servers and stuff so just wanted more cores....

I updated it through the BIOS, so on a thumb drive and whatever "bios update utility" gigabyte has.

Found another thread that had this entry about code 99 :

What is code 99 on aorus master x570?
"Qcode 99 is "Super IO Initialization" and IO meaning anything connected to the board by any interface is not initializing. If you have just built the system, then it is saying a device is not connected properly or there is a lack of power to a device causing the IO error.

It's strange that they concluded that the CPU is faulty with an error that says there is a bad connection. It is not impossible, I still think it is weird.

Agreed. But with it booting with the 5600X it makes it even more weird to me. Wouldn't/shouldn't both run into the same issue?

I'll try that tonight after work. I've unplugged all except 1gpu, boot drive, and front panel. I'll try without front panel IO also next.

It should be that way. But since it is a weird issue.. this can be part of the weird too.

One possible explanation is that the BIOS uses different code for different CPUs (that is normal) but only the code for the 5900X is defective.

I'd normally recommend testing all your components one by one in another computer but I don't think it will accomplish more than what you already tried.

You know what they say ? If it is a weird issue without apparent cause, it is usually the motherboard or the PSU that is at fault. The motherboard seems to be good at some point. But did you try using another PSU ? No need for 1600W, just a 750W should be sufficient for a basic test. It shouldn't be the PSU, but at this point, why not test it ?

Good luck !!!

So it turns out.... Q-Flash Plus does something their regular flash doesn't. Painfully removed everything but the 24 pin from the motherboard, q-flash + with a usb stick (on the same version BIOS i started on) and it booted up first try.

I wasn't aware that Gigabyte's Q-flash plus was doing something different from regular Q-flash (from the BIOS menu). Thanks for sharing the info 🙂
