Upgrading PC for gaming

Filingo

Hello,

Trying to help a friend.

Country: Germany

Currently his build is:

CPU: Intel i5-10400

GPU: RTX 2070S

RAM: 32GB DDR4

He was thinking about upgrading to a B550 + Ryzen 7 5800x3d for about 450 euros.

Now if the budget is around ~450 euros, is there any different upgrade instead of the one above I can suggest him?

I saw that the 7600 is cheaper but I know motherboard are expensive. Also needs DDR5. But perhaps since the 7600 is cheaper it can balance the costs

Or maybe a completely different upgrade at this budget?

Thanks

I'd go with the 5800x3d setup personally.  It's a solid setup.

If he wants to do the 7600, he'll recoup from selling the old stuff, it's around the 5800x3d performance and gives an upgrade path if you go with a decent enough motherboard (if you want to have the features).

For 450 though, get the 5800x3d.

DDR4 ram is super cheap atm so I would imagine between cheaper ram and motherboard you would be cheaper with the 5800x3d. Also keep in mind that 8 vs 6 cores is nice especially when you have background programs open when gaming. The only reason why I would potentially go for the r5 7600 is if I was planning on upgrading to another cpu on the same platform later down the line.

thank you guys, and besides CPU/mobo upgrade - do you think that for gaming he could instead use the money for a better GPU? or no way?

You'd be looking at a 6800xt for that money, and it makes a good case for 10400 + 6800XT at 1440p for example.

Is he using 1080p or 1440p currently?

10400 is fully capable to driving 2070S.

But the large L3 cashe of the 5800X3D will give good results in quite a lots games.

The price of the motherboard is totally different, so there is no need to consider the 7600 if you do not consider further upgrading the CPU later.

AM5 leaves more room for CPU upgrades when a GPU upgrades in the future.

But when the time comes, selling the old one is always a option.

Ahh, then we look at the 10400 + 7700xt vs 5800x3d + 2070S.

IMO, the 2070S is still a decent card.  So I'd lean toward getting the new CPU now, then wait a gen for a GPU.

If you're going better than 3060, are you going 1440p?  I still think the 3060 is a solid 1080p card.

I might go 1440p but even at 1080p, the shitty un-optimized games I play get me unsatisfactory fps lots of drops during intense in-game action. (But maybe that has something to do with my R5 3600 as well lol)

I think the difference between 7700xt and 7800xt is well worth $50, not only in the number of CUs, but also in the difference between 192bit 12GB and 256bit 16GB, and the memory itself is faster on the 7800xt.

Either the 7800XT will be in short supply or the 7700XT will be close to $400 sooner than later.

Good point, the 3600 still wasn't a great gaming cpu.

If you can drop in a cheap used 5600 may be a good idea.

Good point, the 3600 still wasn't a great gaming cpu.

If you can drop in a cheap used 5600 may be a good idea.

They sell a new 5600 for 100 on AliExpress, my other friend ordered that and it really looked new (in tray only without fan but no need for the boxed fan anyway). Might go for it

GPU prices became so high, so annoying

The "just the CPU" product is sold in China through a different distribution channel, not used, not opened, and not at a discount for the cooler.

Cheap, but they are leaked out of OEM or system integrators, so big retailers don't handle it.

Warranty is provided by the store, not by the manufacturer, which can be tough in some foreign countries.

As for the GPU price, I have nothing to say, I already bought a 4070. so...

English is not my first language, and grammatical errors do exist.
