I previously bought an old Dell Dimension XPS Pro from 1997 on Ebay, it was listed as "tested working" it was almost $600

When it arrived I found that while it was clear that it indeed turned on, it was in no way working... The screen would turn on, and a blinking cursor would appear, but that was it. The ROM chip on the motherboard was bad and the entire mobo had to be replaced for something like an additional $100.

So tested to me means nothing more than the hardware had some kind of light or indicator that turned on when they put power to it.

Regardless, I would use eBay's refund policy because the Buyer has far more power than the Seller.

This was years ago, and the rest of the computer worked, it was just frustrating. Plus I got the build working, I just want to know what other people's experiences have been

I always specifically go for items where they show it truly working, booted, running something on a test bench. Unless it’s a vetted seller I know I can trust otherwise.

Ill pay more for the confidence in the product as well, if my choices of GTX 970 are a stock image post “tested and working” for 80$ and a post with personal images showing it in a system running games for $100, I’m spending the extra $20.

I would like to say I do the same, but when it comes to vintage electronics you don't always have that luxury since knowing it's tested and working basically triples the price
