Hi. My Samsung Note 3 is overheating for no reason. I did put thermal pad on the chip. It cooled down a little. But it still overheats and turns off. I underclocked CPU 1900 to 600Mhz and phone becomes very slow. What should i do?

Before I start. I am going to pref this with. My knowledge of phones are limited. So don't hold it against me.
It prob trying to do something and that something new phones can do but knowing how old the note 3 is. It could be struggling.

The Samsung Note 3 is turning 10yrs old this September.

It's probably overheating because it cannot handle all of the background processes of modern firmware.

Firmware is software for the hardware, which doesn't change with android updates, or rather, the device hasn't had updates in at least five or six years, so that can't be it.

What programs do you use on the device?  Have you tried enabling stock power saving mode?

Does the System-on-a-Chip or SoC have thermal compound on it, maybe a different brand would work better.

Gamers Nexus has some videos about thermal compound performance.

Are you using more programs, or new programs that were not yet developed when the Note 3 was released or in that four year span of updates?  New software is probably collecting lots of data.

Try installing (not for the web browser) duckduckgo app, and in its settings enable

app tracking protection

This will inform you of what apps (even pandora) are collecting data and it also blocks that network activity before it can upload it.

This could at least help you pick better apps that aren't spying on your use.

Try F-droid and use apps from there.  There is antennapod for podcasts, Fennec for Firefox with restored about:config, RethinkDNS to combine with a local Pi-Hole or a cloud-based NextDNS account to block all the google / android telemetry.  Firebase is the only acceptable domain that loads, it helps developers know what features of an app you are using.

Windows 11 will just force business to "recycle" "obscolete" hardware.  Microsoft definitely isn't bothered by this at all, and seems to want hardware produced just a few years ago to be considered obsolete.  They have also not shown any interest nor has any other company in a similar financial position, to help increase tech recycling whatsoever.  Windows 12 might be cloud-based and be a monthly or yearly fee.

Just get f.lux [Link removed due to forum rules] so your screen isn't bright white at night, a golden orange in place of stark 6500K bluish white.

released in 2008 and still being improved.

Dark Reader addon for webpages.  Pick any color you want for both background and text (background and foreground page elements).  Enable the preview mode on desktop for Firefox and Chrome addon, by clicking the dark reader addon settings, Choose dev tools amd click preview mode.

NoScript or EFF's privacy badger addons can block many scripts and websites that would load and track you, possibly halving page load time!

F-droid is a place to install open-source software for android, Antennapod, RethinkDNS, Fennec which is Firefox with about:config, lots of performance and other changes available, mozilla KB has a huge database of what most of the settings do.  Most software in the repository only requires Android 5 and 6!

I recommend firewall apps (blocks apps) and dns filters (redirect all dns requests on android, to your choice of dns, even if overridden).  RethinkDNS is my pick and I set it to use pi-hole, installed inside Ubuntu/Debian, which is inside Virtualbox, until I go to a website, nothing at all connects to any other server.  I also use NextDNS.io to do the same when away from home wi-fi or even cellular!  I can even tether from cellular to any device sharing via wi-fi, and block anything with dns set to NextDNS, regardless if the device allows changing dns.  This style of network filtration is being overridden by software updates on some devices, forcing a backup dns provuder, such as google dns, when built in dns requests are not connecting.  Without a complete firewall setup, dns redirection itself is no longer always effective.

Exactly what settings have you changed regarding clock speed (600 Mhz) and voltage especially?

Explain the process of changing the thermal pad in detail, step by step.  Did you remove existing thermal compound material (pasty grey material) and did you use a similar amount, or put more than what was originally there?  It could be there's now too much thermal paste inbetween fhe chip and fhe thermal pad.  I used to have a note 3, it didn't do this.

I m using Kernel Adiutor for underclocking.

There was tiny thermal pad on the chip. I put more thick and better thermal pad.

@ILI-BIGhat software / system are you running, as in: stock (samsung) android, LineageOS etc?

Have you tried a different system?  Is there a reset option for the performance settings?

https://forum.xda-developers.com doesn't seem to have anything for anyrhing past kitkat rom for your device, but I'm sure there is something if you refine the search a few times.

Looks like you'll have to compile your own LineageOS rom or something if you want it to work properly, your rom must have really misconfigured thermal throttling.
