Hello guys,

I'm searching for a ultrawide OLED monitor for under 2000$ CAD (can go up if I found the perfect one).

The specs I have in mind are :

  • 31" or more
  • OLED
  • Great color accuracy
  • Very good HDR
  • 120hz or more
  • Gsync or Vsync
  • 1440p (I have a 2070 super so 4k would be a little much in games)

It's mainly for gaming and media consumption.

I've looked at the Odyssey OLED G8 and the Alienware aw3423dw/aw3423dwf but not really sure which one is a good (the alienware for exemple seems to have some firmware issues with HDR, not sure if it's resolved.)

Would love your advice on this one, thanks!

I would honestly wait till the next wave of them to come out, The first gen OLEDS are nice, but they do have their issues.

First gen OLEDS on the desktop Monitors at least. Alienware's monitors have had an absolute TON of issues and reports, so its one of those you may want to avoid. And Samsungs one also had a few issues. If you get a good one you are fine, but that If isnt exactly encouraging when its an expensive product as they are.

My friend has this monitor

LG UltraGear 45" OLED Curved WQHD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-SYNC compatible Gaming Monitor with HDR10 (DisplayPort, HDMI, USB) Black 45GR95QE-B.AUS - Best Buy

He's had issues with flicker on G-sync so he keeps it disabled, but overall its an amazing display in his opinion. He wanted to stick with ultrawide and I went away from it. Just another consideration.

I'd consider a GPU upgrade instead of dropping a bunch of $$ on a better display with a 2070 super. Its a decent card still, but comparably if you budget in a new display and GPU, you'll probably get a better experience overall.

My take on OLED ultrawides, as I love the format of 21:9 (not a fan of 32:9) but have already had a 3440x1440 display for the last 5 years.

I've was running an Asus PG348Q from about early 2017 to earlier this year. 3440x1440 34" IPS 100Hz. It was time to upgrade and I knew I wanted OLED, but as usual when I upgrade monitors, I want a resolution increase.

So I looked at what's available hoping there would be some 38" 3840x1600 options but nope, nothing. Even the 45" 21:9 OLED's were 3440x1440 and that wasn't going to cut it. CES came and went and nothing in 21:9 over 3440x1440 was announced. To hold me over I picked up an LG C2 and am extremely happy with it, however when the new crop of 21:9 ultradies drop, I'm definitely moving to those.

45" 5120x2160 @ 165Hz OLED is sounding like my end game.

I want to upgrade my 2070 SUPER with the next generation of GPU (Something like a 5080).

The monitor looks great but it a little bit big for me, I'm more in the 31-38" max

If 34" 3440x1440 is what you're after, there are a number of great ones available now. Two from Alienware, one from Samsung, one from MSI and probably at this point one or two others.

Nice ! Is the HDR nice ? From what I read the Alienware 34 dw is the same but with more brightness

Dwf offers the ability to upgrade the firmware. They offer a 3 year screen warranty.

To be honest the hdr is OK, it's not as good as my oled TV. But it's way better than my old ips panel.

The blacks are black it's awesome. Games are behind the tech that's the only complaint. So new games will look better.

It's showing 993 nits on windows 11. Ive got mine set up on 1000hdr. Used rtings for it.

There's no blooming. I was going to get the Samsung but i didn't think it was worth the extra £250 in the uk

The Dell Alienware AW3423DWF is the best choice atm. It has the same panel as the Samsung and MSI counterparts, but is mostly the cheapest and has good out of the box color accuracity. The HDR issues were resolved in a firmware update, so if you order one just make sure it runs the most recent firmware.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Thanks, yeah it seems like a really good choice! The AW3423DW seems to be cheaper and have Gsync ultimate (at least of dell.ca, due to a "promotion"). Is it worth it or should I stick with the AW3423DWF?

I have heard that there is a really good burn-in warranty (3 years) that comes with those alienware model. Do you know if they are really solid (any burn-in = replacment) or does it need special condition for the burtn-in warranty to be in effect?

Thanks for your advice!

How are people differentiating generations of OLED ..?

LG's OLEDs have been on the market for several years, and most publications regarded their 2021 evo screens as "second generation"

First gen Desktop Monitor OLEDs only came out last year/earlier this year.  There will be an update hopefully by next year, but we shall see, sometimes they take their time and do 2-3 years for it but their TVS are almost always pumped out every year so i dont see why not also monitors.

There should be something in the name to indicate it.

You should stick with the F version, buying the one with G-Sync module is gambling as it cannot firmware update, if your unit arrived with problematic firmware, the only thing you can do is send back to Dell for another unit replacement and it happened people getting back refurnished unit or even worst problematic version.

Actually what gen is not that important, important is how they tune the output.

  • LG surely no issue and never have HDR issue.
  • Asus depends on model and nearly all model required firmware update to correct the HDR output.
  • Dell wise after firmware update is also ok, so don't take the no F version which cannot firmware update and gambling to get the best.
  • Samsung so far also ok and currently only Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 is 2nd gen QD-OLED, it performs better in text clarity as they change the sub pixel layout a bit compared with 1st gen QD-OLED, all Ultrawide 34" is using QD-OLED 1st gen included Samsung Odyssey OLED G8.

For Wide screen, those 27" try to avoid Acer as Acer is the only doesn't included options to turn off ABL.
