2.0 or 2.1, either one

If it is for a TV and you do want decent sound I'd go with a 2.1 speaker system. This is because the .1 is for the subwoofer which controls treble and bass and so you can get much better sound with it.

As cheap as possible but not so cheap that it will be a waste

Okay, but it would be helpful to know what the max is that you'd be willing to spend.

For improved casual listening and keeping the cost down, a sound bar is definitely the way to go.

You know, you might be right about that, however it would need to have a subwoofer to get some nice cinematic sound. :D

i'd say about $100

Okay, we can help you but there is something that I would encourage you to do as I would do and that is to take a look at these speakers (http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=567_568&zenid=848c877dec94cabbc20499b21a05e1ed) and pick out all the ones that are close to $100 and go and look at reviews of them either by Googling each one or on YouTube, although possible both. That way you get a better understanding of which ones are awesome and which ones are crap. ;)

Well looking at PCCG, a set of 2.1 speakers around your price range will either be $75 or $145, but according to your profile, you are in QLD which means you will be paying for shipping which will be a killer.

JB HIFI are everywhere AND They sell Logitech computer speakers, hell, even officeworks do too - and they will match or beat prices

OR you can go for a 2.0 set up, but you will miss out on a lot of bass.

$99 for these - they look kind of cool, too.

But once again, they will lack a lot of bass.

I have a set of the Audioengine 2 - but the lack of sub killed them for me, so I bought an S8 sub and haven't looked back.

Well this is to reduce noise coming through walls so no bass might be an option

alright

Is there anywhere you can buy used bookshelf speakers? The best thing near that price at pccg is Swan M10 at $145 but bigger speakers would be better for home theater. Some used bookshelfs might be better for that price.

Why not just go to your closest MSY? Even I shop at MSY for convenience or when I can save a bit of money and don't really care about breaking it.
