Help with repurposing old SSD

Recently I got myself a new laptop but I'd still like to use my old SSD from my old laptop as like an external portable drive whenever possible. I've purchased a SATA to USB Adapter so that I can use it. My only concern is I want to format it but I don't wanna click on the wrong settings and mess things up. Any help with this?
