Upgrading CPU and getting BSOD & boot loop

Upgraded from a 3900X to a 5900X tonight. Upon starting my pc after install, it immediately goes to BSOD Machine Check Exception, then to WHEA Uncorrectable Error.

Tried without XMP, right into WHEA.

I've reseated my CPU twice, booted into Windows for about 30 seconds and then it BSODed again after logging in. Currently just boot looping into a BSOD.

Aggressively Googled this and nothing I can find works.

I'm on the most current stable BIOS release. I've cleared CMOS.

CPU idling at 41⁰C according to BIOS.

I can't get into the OS so I can't get dumpfiles.

Booting into safe mode doesn't work at all.

Is my new CPU defective?

Any help at all is much appreciated and much needed. I really have no clue what to do.

With the old CPU it works fine?

How old is the Windows install?

Tried running sfc /scannow before installing the newer CPU?

Using the latest chipset drivers from AMD?

Bios reset prior to CPU upgrade?

WHEA means that it's the CPU or a PCIe device. I would set up a bootable USB maybe with Linux as that will show the arguments of the MCE which tells us what is wrong if you get a kernel panic. You can also test booting without the NVMe as this uses PCIe (I assume you have an NVMe) to have that ruled out.

The CPU is the obvious suspect, we could get closer to confirming it if we can get this information.

On my old CPU it boots into Windows just fine, Windows is up to date.

sfc /scannow shows nothing wrong.

BIOS was reset.

Updated to the latest x570 drivers, I'll give that a try. Anything else to update before I try the new cpu?

It's definitely the 5900X, my 3900X works perfectly. I do have 2 M.2s, but my boot drive is a SATA SSD

Then the only thing left really is making sure that the BIOS you installed wasn't a beta BIOS as these can have bugs. If you are unsure how to check this post your motherboard model.

It's the latest full release, ver. F36, Gigabyte X570 Aorus Ultra. Updated about 2 weeks ago

If you verified the bios should work with the cpu, and the change that makes the system not work is switching out the cpu, pretty much tells you it’s the cpu. RMA time.

Didn't work. It loads into Windows, I log in and it BSODs again after a few seconds. Just gonna swap back to my old CPU and defective return it.

There's one more thing to try. Loading into safe mode with the new CPU or loading a new OS and see if the same happens.

The easiest way to load into safe mode is, with the old CPU enter msconfig and there select "Safee boot" with networking, turn the PC off, install the new CPU, boot into Windows. If it works in safe mode, then it's something wrong with your programs or the OS.

Couldn't boot into Safe mode at all with the 5900X.

Have a new problem now, I switched back to my 3900X and games now have huge stuttering when moving my mouse around. Drops to about 25fps, CPU is only peaking at about 25% usage, which is normal, and I have never had this issue before. CPU is only at ~48°C under load. Normal clock speeds so I don't know what could be causing this.

Memory diagnostic is running presently.

Reinstall windows?

Any bent pins on any of the CPU?

Any paste in the mbo socket?

Maybe a faulty MBO?

The 5900X, was it purchased new or used? Warranty available?

No bent pins, no paste the socket.

I doubt mobo is faulty as I've used it for the last 3 1/2 years and had no troubles with it.

CPU was bought new, I have a replacement on the way from Amazon. Dropped it off at my job to be looked at to verify defective cpu or software issue, it'll be a couple days before I can get into it again

Upgraded for gaming and for work. I just got it back from them. They were able to get it to work literally perfectly, now it's doing it to me yet again once I plug it in at home. Except now when I start up my PC it BSODs at startup or on the windows login screen. I'm genuinely lost at this point.

Provide dump files, but chances are they will just point to the CPU.

Will do once I'm home. Work said they think it's something with the mobo since some thermal paste in the pins of the 5900X when I reseated it, but I disagree as my 3900X is working perfectly and the thermal paste was non-conductive. Replacement 5900X is arriving Monday. Any chance it could be that the system isn't receiving enough power from the wall? One of my other coworkers suggested I try a completely separate outlet.

I would expect just straight shut down from that, but it depends a bit on the PSU.

Possibility of it being mobo though? I really don't want to buy another mobo.
