Hey guys,

Just read, while trying to troubleshoot crashes on The Last of Us, that for pagefile size: "you need to take your total RAM amount and multiply it by 1.5 (under initial size). Set the maximum size to 3 times your total RAM amount."

I have 32GB ram. a 96GB pagefile seems... a lot. Is what I read strictly true or will it only be useful for extreme cases? My 1TB SSD is full of games all the time, you know how all of them are at least 50GB nowadays, and it's annoying to have to delete them.

Thanks!

seems excessive, just dont touch the windows default.
The 3x your ram or whatever does not make sense as a suggestion anyways. The less ram you have the more you use your page file as stuff cant fit in your memory.

Is your crash error code really telling you to increase page file or are you just part cannoning it without looking at the error code?

TLOU PC port is a piece of shit, if you are running out of 32Gs of RAM playing then I would highly recommend refunding the game there and then.

There is no error code that I can see, I'm just getting a ton of crashes and I'm trying random things at this point because all the obvious stuff didn't work. Maybe I should enable their crash logging tool and see if I can make sense of the results.

Only problem I've had with the PC port (other than poor optimization, but that's why I got a 2k€ PC lol) is the crashes, really. Can't say it's too bad of a port other than that.

Played through the whole game perfectly fine with 32GB of RAM. Under no circumstance should you need to modify the default Windows page file settings just to play the game, Its certainly smarter than you. Something else is wrong with your PC. If you're out of drive space, this is likely part of the problem so I would work on remedying that.

I always keep 50+GB but this time I had 120 (on a 1TB SSD), I think it's fine, no?

I have seen lots of reports of the game still crashing on the latest patch (1.1.0), but also lots of other reports of it having fixed stability issues... I seem to be in the minority though. Every other game runs fine so I have no idea what the problem could possibly be.

It only crashes in specific areas, and disabling SSAO for some reason (just that setting) multiplies the amount of time before I see a crash by at least 10. However, even going very low + capping fps at 60 + downscaling res does not help further than disabling SSAO already does.

Anyways I'm off-topic now, but thanks for the help guys 🙂

Yes, that is the Windows default size for the pagefile; 3 X the amount of RAM.  I noticed this when I upgraded to Windows 11.  I know that it was not this size when I was running Windows 10, I think that default was 1.5 X.   I've left it alone as I installed a 1TB NVME before I upgraded to Windows 11 and there is more than enough room as I only have apps on the system drive.

Well, I tried doing the pagefile thing anyway, no change, so I went back to default settings.

I tried 1.0.5 version, still crashed. Tried disabling xmp, same thing. Nothing that I tried worked. It really is just a matter of graphics quality. Ultra = crash in 30 seconds tops, SSAO off = gain a minute or two, all very low = gain 3-4 minutes total. The more actions I take, the likelier I'm gonna crash, which is another weird thing. I'm getting a lot of crashes when I equip a bomb and aim with it, it's like it's a drop too many.

Exception code is always 0x80000003 in the event viewer. Has nothing to do with rebar unlike what was stated by people in the few threads I found with my exact problem ("I disabled SAM and it works!"). Rebar does nothing to help or worsen, off or on, in bios or amd settings. At this point I'm at a complete loss. All I can do now is just abuse the autosave feature and progress 1 minute at a time until I leave the bad area and hope it won't happen again.

16 GB or less, set a page file of at least 1.5x,  2x or more if you set the page file fixed (if it's on a mechanical hard drive, fixed size page files can be moved to the start of a mechanical drive for lowest latency and access time and faster seek times). On SSDs there's no benefit for having fixed page files, but set minimum to 1x-1.5x and let it expand as needed.

With 32 GB or more, it's still a good practice to have some page file, maybe 8-16 GB set as minimum.

Page file isn't used only for caching programs, it's also used by Windows to cache fonts, icons of files and lots of things and they're dumped to page file to make room in ram for applications. But it's faster to retrieve such content (icons in various sizes, fonts etc) from page file instead of accessing tens to hundreds of files to extract icons and parsing font lists.
