My mother just recently acquired a 4 horsepower treadmill and decided to place it in the computer room. Upon turning the treadmill off or the TV i use as a monitor blacks out for an instant. I initially though it was the TV itself, but upon further inquiry i determined the fault to lie in my computer, as other inputs are unaffected. Although I cannot be 100% sure my best guess is that the magnetic field created by the electric motor somehow interferes with my computer.

Should I be worried about this or just ignore it, and if I should worry what precautions should I take to protect my rig?

Also probably not the best place to post this, but i couldn’t find a proper category.............

edit "i moved my comp to another room(hopefully temporarily)"

edit 2"they are on different circuts. beffore i moved my comp to antother room i put distance between the two, initially it always flicked and was almost unusable when the treadmil was on, then i put some distance between the two which helped, but everyonce in awhile i would see it flicker"

Thanks in advance,

Crazypirateninja

4 hp = 2.98279949 kilowatts = 3000 watts

if you know that (in belgium atleast) an electric circuit is built for only +- 3600 watts, you then use 3000 watts of it for the treadmill, and another couple watts for your PC+monitor+lamps, it can add up.

i recommend plugging either the treadmill or the PC + monitor in the socket of another "electrical circuit" (sometimes different rooms use the same elektrical circuit, sometimes they are grouped with certain rooms,...)

i dont think that it's the magnetic field created by the motor , because it need to be pretty hell of a magnet field to affect it in such a manner.not even close. you should get a good line interactive ups as these fluctuations can cause your PC to die in near future.

well, in theory every motor has an internal magnetic field. (or else they wouldn't rotate ;) ) it could be the consequenses of the magnetic field giving his problem.

sorry for making things complicated :D

yes, it might i guess , but a magnetic field (strong as the one you said) would cause hdd to stutter thus making images on the monitor gets shaky/jittery from the moment its been introduced into the field.

since the problem is only present while the threadmill is being turned off, i think the machine is drawing quick burst of power from the wall (i dont know why) & like all voltage fluctuation case, a massive drop means those objects that require a minimum power draw to function properly are gonna wanna switch off or stop working temporarily until reliable watts has been restored. i think that's what's happening to him right now. maybe a line interactive ups plugged in would steady the voltages & stop the temp black out.

@crazy pirate ninja

and by the way if you have a compass lying aroung , use it & try to see it it's moving the needle off the position while the threadmill is turning down or up. you can then make sure that there's a good enough magnetic field that can interfere.
