Computer Underperforming (Possibly RAM related?)

Hey all,

Over the past couple of months I've noticed that my PC is underperforming in games, especially when compared to benchmarks of a similar build. I came to the conclusion that it was because I had single channel RAM, so I added another one. There was an immediate performance boost, which in essence fixed my problem. However, a few days after adding the second stick all of a sudden performance degraded (I do not recall altering anything), as if it reverted to single channel performance, even though both RAM sticks were working and operating in dual channel. No solution I've tried has solved the problem, from switching slots, to reinstalling windows and so on. What could've caused this and how can I fix it?

 

Specifications:

ASUS TUF GTX 1650 SUPER

Intel Core i5 10400

Kingston DDR4 16x2 GB (After adding a second stick, both are the same model and frequency - 2666Mhz)

MB: Asus Prime H410M-E

Antec V500P Plus PSU

SanDisk SSD Plus SATA 1TB

From what I can see in my BIOS xmp is unavailable.

What's your 3DMark score? We could compare your performance to similar systems...

Fire Strike benchmark gave me 11004, Graphics: 12361, Physics: 17366, Combined Score: 4639

That's an expected score for a system like that.

 

Maybe it's not that you're losing performance, maybe your performance is as it should be with that card (which is terrible).

So you're going by a benchmark score telling me the performance which I had back when I added the second RAM stick was "magic"? Back when I added it performance in games nearly doubled and I had no problems whatsoever, no doubt what I'm getting currently is not the expected performance not is it the best I can get from my hardward.

Which games? Which resolution, details, and framerate?

Spiderman Remastered 1980x1020, Medium settings, Before upgrade: 30-40 fps, After upgrade: smooth 60 fps. As of right now it's also 30 to 40 fps.

Temps while playing: CPU - 59 to 64 degrees, GPU - 47 to 67 degrees

Usage: CPU - 20% to 30%, GPU - 98% to 99%, RAM - Around 35%, SSD - Does not go higher than 4%

Resizable BAR enabled in the Bios?

Latest GPU drivers?

Other drivers updated? Checked with Driver Booster?

Checked Spectre and Meltdown disabled with InSpectre?

Using something like MSI afterburner?

Tried resizable BAR, doesn't do anything, all drivers updated, BIOS also up to date, for monitoring I use GeForce Experience.

Other than a browser, no.

Download hwinfo. Run it in the background and play a game for 5 mins. Post the sensors info here. Use the<-> to expand it so you can get all the info in one screen capture.

 

something is likely throttling if you’re dropping performance. This will identify what it is, or rule out throttling and point to some other issue.

Does it change with the browser not running?

It might be MultiPlane Overlay causing you issues, try disabling it.

Disabling MultiPlane Overlay and restarting the computer does not seem to help.

Your gpu hotspot temp is quite high, over the temp limit. You may be seeing temperature related throttling. If you want to confirm, download GPU-Z and run that while gaming. Perfcap reason will tell you if the card is throttling. Red is temp, blue is voltage regulation, green is power limit.

 

Psu is running a bit low on the 12v rail but not overly so, still well within spec. All other sensors look normal.
 

If you want to rule out thermal throttling try cleaning off the card heatsink with compressed air and leaving the case side panel off.

Something to note is that both of the RAM sticks I have are the same model and manufacturer, but one of them I bought at a later stage. Would that be a plausible explanation for it temporarily working properly?

If I would buy a kit of 2x16 GB of RAM, would it possibly solve the issue?

No, they are running in dual channel. As long as you’re not crashing, extremely unlikely ram is your problem.

I will attempt to clean the GPU once I can, until then, other possible solutions would be appreciated.

Update: Cleaning the GPU and the fans did not help. The issue still remains.
