i just bought the LG C2 42" OLED

Go to solution Solved by Stahlmann,

DISCLAIMER: The following isn't meant to copy and paste already posted information (in the videos), but are the optimal settings i discovered based on my experience with my own C2.

My unit had a bit of undersaturation on desktop when HDR was enabled and the color space in the TV was set to Auto. I set the color space to "native" (basically DCI-P3) because i'd rather have a bit of oversaturation instead of undersaturation.

Other than that, set it to game optimizer and set prevent input delay to boost. Leave everything else alone in game optimizer settings.

In color settings, set the white balance to warm 42-50. (50 is recommended by most reviewers, but to reach the optimal 6500K whitepoint i had to turn it down to 42 with my unit) Also in the color settings, set the tone mapping to HGIG for the most consistent experience across different HDR games.

In Nvidia driver settings set it to 3840x2160 120Hz 8bit RGB. (gradient handling is worse in 10 bit or 12 bit modes, so make sure to use 8 bit, even in HDR).

I also installed the Color Control software and disabled the global auto dimming (where the picture gets darker over time), as it was a bit distracting when using the forum for example. I left logo dimming, pixel shifting and ABL enabled for some burn-in protection. As a bonus this app also works as a virtual wifi remote and can turn the TV on and off depending on what your PC is doing (shutdown, sleep, wake up, etc.) You can do all that without buying the service remote.

If you aim for 100 nits SDR brightness like i do and want to keep HDR enabled all the time, set the SDR conversion slider to 5. This results in around 98 nits on my unit. Turning the TV brightness to 100 nits peak also essentially completely disables ABL for SDR useage.

Turn sharpness down to 0 in the picture settings, as HDR picture modes have it at 10 by default. Leave the other color, saturation and brightness sliders at their default position.

If the game supports HDR settings, you should set it to the following:

Fullscreen brightness = 800 nits

Peak brightness = 800 nits

Paper white (also called UI brightness in some games) = 100 nits

Black level = 0 nits

(Yes, the TV obviously can't do 800 nits in peak or fullscreen, but these are the values you're aiming for with HGIG. These settings essentially disable double tonemapping that would otherwise lead to clipping in shadows or highlights)

Feel free to ask any further questions. I've been using the C2 as my main monitor almost a year now. And i do have a colorimeter so i'm able to do color and brightness measurements. Because of that i can probably give some useful information that other C2 users don't have access to.

Skyrim is a good example on why i don't like AutoHDR. Because most of the UI including text is just white, the AutoHDR feature will render these at full brightness. I personally don't want my UI to permanently blast at me with 650 nits. It was even worse when i still had my PG35VQ because this monitor could do 1100 nits and so that's what it did all the time.

The distinction between UI and the 3D-scene is probably the most important difference between Auto-HDR and real HDR.

I don't mind the brighter UI myself, and quite a few of HDR games also have brighten UI so it's not entirely a bug.

I have more issue with how they've made every patch of white radiant like the suface of the sun. My fur tent shouldn't look like it was illuminating just because it has a patch of white fur. Also not sure if it's because of the auto HDR or my mod but the highlight on skin tone also look kinda off - like green even but overall, I don't really hate it for this game in particulr

When start using the Auto HDR, I was amaze wow! nice but ... ... later I notice it got issue here and there, it is not perfect and without it is much better.

I already off Auto HDR and never plan to switch on back anytime soon, unless they is a news from Microsoft said improvement on it, else this feature is going to permanently off for me.

That's extremely advanced software, be very careful. I haven't done it yet, the issue for me doesn't crop up unless in one specific game.

From Rtings review, the ABL is off when you set the monitor as PC input, but off course this also means they will dimming down the SDR brightness.

I think the dimming down is ok as long you not in very bright room.

I think what he means what was reference early, TPC.

Speaking of @Stahlmann I've got Color Control going now just out of curiosity. I have it setup as a service so it'll turn the TV on when the PC is powered on. I'm poking around and can't find anything related to TPC.

But the ABL is off when set as PC, in this case, they is not required using any apps or access the service menu to disable the ABL.

My understanding is we're not talking about ABL but rather TPC or Temporal Peak Luminance which is only available in the service menu. The display, in my case only with Diablo 4, will gradually dim then randomly pop back to where it should be.

You can't turn it off directly in the software. The software allows you to go into the TV's native service menu. And this is where you can disable TPC.

After downloading and starting the app, you'll need to connect your TV in the LG controller tab by entering the IP and MAC adress from the TV's network settings. Also make sure to "enable TV on with mobile" under general settings > devices > external devices. Now just tick all the boxes in the upper window of the LG controller tab and the TV should register your PC activity and turn on or off accordingly.

To enter the service menu, go to the LG controller tab, lick on the settings button on the right and enable "Show advanced actions".

image.thumb.png.0d7cf73c95cf16220d1a2145fdd66688.png

In the service menu, navigate to OLED in the middle row by clicking down on your remote, then disable TPC. (the first option on the right panel)

While you're in there, also check what it says under "Module Info 2". if it says "08/00/1/03" then your unit is confirmed to have the newer WBE (OLED EX) panel technology. The WBE panels should last longer against burn-in because they use less power and emit less heat, which means the pixels don't wear off as fast.

I don't recommend touching any other option in the service menu as i haven't used them myself and cannot guarantee their safety.

I hope this helps!

As a side note: Yesterday i bought the Calman Home for LG software license (they finally updated it to support the C2's internal test pattern generator, which means you don't have to buy one for thousands of dollars) which will allow me to fully calibrate the TV. I will post some before and after slides later if you're interested in the results.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Awesome! So I have advanced checked off and under the Expert button I have what I believe is the is the service menu "InStart"?

However clicking that doesn't do anything so I'm not sure what I'm missing to actually get into the service menu. I looked around in the TV's settings using the physical remote and can't find any new options there either.

The app doesn't add the options in your native TV settings.

Make sure to check all the boxes in this tab and then restart the app.image.thumb.png.57efa41b525ff2c0f10bc52a941ee138.png

Now clicking on the option should start the service menu, which you can then control with the physical remote.

We’re in! Does look to have the updated panel too so that’s neat. As for all the check boxes, all I’m interested in is having the display turn ON at boot, not off. Is the only box needed the one I had selected earlier?

I’ve already got it set to run as a service.

We’re in! Does look to have the updated panel too so that’s neat. As for all the check boxes, all I’m interested in is having the display turn ON at boot, not off. Is the only box needed the one I had selected earlier?

Just tick all the boxes that have anything to do with power on.

Well I just did a few test runs and it doesn't seem to want to turn it on. I'll keep messing with it I guess. TV On With Mobile is definitely on, and Color Control picks up the TV no problem automatically on my network. Dunno but I'll fiddle around with it some more. Thanks though!

Might need to go on options tab and click on 'Automatically start after login' if you haven't. Without the program running it won't work.

Just completed the calibration of the SDR game optimizer picture mode. Top is factory settings, bottom is after the calibration:

Even in game mode, that's basically reference-level color accuracity. All you need is a $200 colorimeter and $140 software... 😅

The biggest advantage over just using the free DisplayCal software is that this is not an ICC profile, so the calibration will work all the time and with 100% software compatibility. The calibration settings are stored directly in the TV.

I'm gonna do HDR game optimizer next, maybe i'll also do the non-game modes tomorrow. But since the TV is in it's respective game modes most of the time, it's not a big priority for now.

My understanding was having it run as a Windows service removed the need for that, though I might be wrong?

No you still need the app to run 24/7. The Windows service is basically just so it has launch priority.

That I'm not entirely sure as I get error pop-up from that method. Run as admin along with starting after login is an alternative solution.

Got it. The option in the software specicially says Automatically start after login so we'll see if that works. The display has to be on for me to login 😆

Windows services launch when you hit the login screen, even when you're not yet logged in. So it might take a few seconds but it should eventually turn on the TV.

These are the results after calibrating the HDR game optimizer mode:

Results are also great in terms of color accuracity. Only grayscale performance somehow has a dent around 70%-80% that i can't really iron out.

I alternatively used HCFR to try to manually calibrate SDR mode, as one of my annoyance with OLED is inconsistent gamma curve. IIRC I raised dark levels significantly to try to suit sRGB curve and it was no fun 😂

Don't wanna manually calibrate HDR yet as I'm not up there yet with knowledge nor really needing accurate colours. Afterall I'm only using for gaming and watching.

May I know which colorimeter is recommended in this price range.

I have the X-Rite i1Display Pro Plus. But it's been discontinued and replaced by the Display Pro HL - Calibrite - United Kingdom

It will overwrite and lock the color settings for the specific picture mode you calibrated. You can still reset the picture mode if you want to reverse the calibration. And you can still change all the other picture settings like brightness, motion settings, etc.
