£2000 UK Computer

C4xy

Budget (including currency): ~£2000

Country: UK (Northern Ireland)

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Used for gaming only: apex legends, stellaris, starfield, other AAA and strategy games.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

I currently have a 1080p monitor but was thinking about upgrading to a 1440p one. I want to upgrade because im noticing that recent AAA games are having a hard time running at ultra settings on my 1060. I prefer nvidia so I was thinking of going for a 4070ti for raytracing and dlss support. I'm not sure what ram to get between ddr4 and ddr5

What i think:

i5 13600k

4070ti

not sure what motherboard becausae im not sure if ddr4 or ddr5

32gb DDR4 3200Mhz (vengeance) OR G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB Series (Intel XMP) 32GB 6400

Corsair RM750x 750W

Currently have:

i5 7600

1060 6gb

16gb DDR4 26666

If you already have a good AIO cpu cooler or something similar, disregard the suggested cooler I put in the list. Go for a 850W PSU then.

This is actually really really good. There is no Bottleneck. The 5800X3D pairs fantastic with the 7900XTX.

I would be more concerned with spending £300 on a motherboard for an end of life platform. A more sensible option would be something like a Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite V2 for £100ish. Just bought the same board myself and it will easily handle any AM4 cpu. If you are going to shell out the best part of £600 on a cpu/board then you might as well go with AM5.

If you don't need the monitor as part of the £2000 budget then yes.

DLSS 3 is as good as it gets if you're into that thing. If you're into pure raster then the 7900 XT is a good choice for 1440 if you can get that card for around the same price as the 4070 Ti.  If you're looking at high frame rates for 1080P then the 4070 is a tough card to beat.

What i think:

i5 13600k

4070ti

not sure what motherboard becausae im not sure if ddr4 or ddr5

32gb DDR4 3200Mhz (vengeance) OR G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB Series (Intel XMP) 32GB 6400

Corsair RM750x 750W

Currently have:

i5 7600

1060 6gb

16gb DDR4 26666

Reasonable selection of parts, though if going Nvidia I'd probably save the ~£200 and get the vanilla 4070 and not the TI version. It will be good enough for now to play at 2560x1440 and it leaves you more cash to save or spend elsewhere. Especially since the 4070Ti has the same 12GB VRAM, I really don't think it's worth the extra when it really should have more VRAM for the money (and clearly Nvidia were hoping to sell the Ti for even more money as the 12GB 4080).

The 7900XTX isn't a bad choice but it's £200 more than the 4070Ti and power consumption of current AMD cards is a concern. And AMD's product page points you to a minimum PSU of 800W. It's 70W for the 4070Ti, 650W for the 4070. Nvidia's PSU requirements assume a 5900X. The 13600K can use more power - not comparing like with like but a 5900X has a default TDP of 105W, the 13600K a max TDP of 181W - so a 750W PSU should be OK for a 4070 but leaves you with little headroom. If you're really set on the 4070Ti... go 850W or more.

If you're considering a 13600K then a 4070 is a sensible choice. As for RAM, I'd go with DDR5 - DDR4 is cheaper now but you're not going to be able to reuse it should you rebuild in 5 years time or so. Whether that matters is subjective and considering you already have 16GB DDR4 and clearly don't want to reuse that RAM... it suggests that upgrade paths aren't strictly relevant.

Something to keep in mind is that most posts tend to assume you're budget is fixed or is what you want to spend and then suggest parts lists to fill that budget. Obviously you're perfectly entitled to ignore that (including this post if you wish) and just save some money which I think would actually be the better choice if you don't want to go beyond a 4070Ti.

9 hours ago, filpo said:

This is an utterly subjective opinion and most results I've read suggest you're wrong. Whether it's relevant to the OP is the question - tbh I personally focus on pure rasterisation performance vs DLSS, specifically due to some artefacting I've experienced on older F1 games where I had DLSS enabled (when I don't need it).  I really wouldn't focus on DLSS/FSR performance and look at pure rasterisation numbers to decide on which GPU to go for.

I would be more concerned with spending £300 on a motherboard for an end of life platform.

Very sensible comment. Ryzen 5000 CPUs are great, but the platform no longer has an upgrade path so I'd avoid AM4 for a newbuild. To an extent the same can be said for Intel (even allowing for the latest 14th gen rumours to be a Raptor Lake refresh that's socket compatible) - the difference for me is DDR5 support and that you could reuse that in a few years time, whereas I'm confident in saying that Intel won't support DDR4 on Meteor Lake and beyond based on past precedent (6th/7th gen supported both DDR3&4, prior to that DDR4, since 8th gen DDR4 only. Same thing happened in late stage LGA775 and Core 2 CPUs - 1st gen Core i series never supported DDR2, or any DDR3 module that required more than 1.65V).

tbh I'd go DDR5 now and at least it gives you the option to reuse it in the future (it will likely still be relevant in 5 years time). That certainly won't be the case with DDR4.
