Hello,

I am planning to build a new PC using Ryzen 5600 and I want to use USB-C dual HDMI dock to switch between the PC and my laptop. I was looking for a motherboard that has usb-c and I found ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING. It has a usb-c header in the back. Will it work with my usb-c dock? I think it has USB 3.2 gen 1 connector. Will there be any problem routing it through the motherboard if the Ryzen 5600 doesn't have a graphics card. If there was a problem with usb-c docks on Ryzen in general I was thinking about going with 12400f.

Thank you for your help

That won't work. What your asking about is a KVM switch.

Is this the only way or does there exist a combination of cpu motherboard I can plug USB-C rock to motherboard and it will just work as in a laptop.

I don't know of any other way than this. Thunderbolt support on desktop, isn't something I have played around with a lot.

If you want display you need a supporting platform, for DP over USB-C on Intel side you'd need either a CPU with iGPU (so not an F part) and display would get routed through that but possibly with some performance loss in games or such other demanding applications running on another GPU. Might be hard to find whether a particular mobo supports it and I don't know about AMD.

Otherwose a mobo like an Asus Proart that has actual full blown Thunderbolt support with an input you can connect the GPU too. In that case you also need an actual Thunderbolt dock, not just standard USB-C.

I want to use my PC as some sort of media center/emulation machine and I wanted it to support my dock in case I needed it. But if it this complicated I think I will just let it go. I figured it wouldn't be such a problem because I am using a Ryzen laptop with USB c support but if it's such a hassle I will let it go. I would obly use it for work so performance loss isn't something I would be worried about. But I figured I would just need something like 5600G with usb-c Mobo to use it but this just seem like a lot of work. Anyways, thank you for your help.

For the record I have 2 mobos with Thunderbolt 3 support (no display input) and on these display output from the iGPU works, and one with just USB-C ports without TB and there it doesn't, all Intel 7, 9th and 13th gen respectively. So DP over USB-C might be tied to TB support.

The usb c header on the back of the -F is for sound supposedly. But it is a Gen 1 connection, slow as feck. I tested with my phone. My XE has all kinds of connections regular B550 doesn’t have.
