Heya,

I've been going through the process of creating a NAS/home server with some spare parts I have but have hit a roadblock. I'm not sure how to format/partition my drives.

I saw, in an Intel Extreme Tech Upgrade video, Linus talking about a method negating the worry about loss of hard drive capacity by *unknown cause* above 8TB and that every drive added there-forth to a system would be raw capacity.

How is this possible? I may have misunderstood what this meant but does it negate the effects of the partition table eating up your capacity?

If it's not possible, what are other suggestions for a data hoarding PC with the possibility of running a website or Minecraft server?

Thanks,

Qwesty

I am guessing that you mean space lost to parity, partition tables take up next to no space.

I also guess that he is talking about unraid. After the first parity disk, everything added would be raw capacity added.

First, thanks so much. Second, when saying "unraid" are you referring to the OS? Just want to make sure I'm not getting that wrong before I spend the next few days working on it.

Correct. If you want to use mixed size drives or add drives easily, its the best option.
