On the market for a new gaming display

tankyx

I am looking to replace my AOC Q27G2U for gaming on PC (5900x RTX3090) and I don't really know which way to go ?

OLED or Mini LED ?

I am looking at the Asus PG27AQDM and the Samsung Odyssey Neo G7/G8.

My current screen isn't bright enough in SDR tbf and I fear the Asus might suffer of the same issue.

Anybody tries one of those ?

I made the mistake of getting a 27" 1080p monitor, if you wanted to go bigger monitor maybe go with 2k or 4k res.

You should get this if you want a very bright screen.

I am using Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 and in SDR, I only set my brightness at 44 and it is already freaking bright.

The Asus OLED is pretty much the best gaming monitor on the market. I'd recommend to get that one. HDR brightness peaks around 1000 nits for smaller objects, fullscreen brightness and SDR peak brightness sits around 250 nits. SDR and fullscreen aren't the brightest, but still enough for most people i'd say. The other advantages like the lack of pixel overdrive, top-tier input lag and perfect blacks without local dimming more than make up for it.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

ASUS is meant to release a new 4k PG32UQXR. I'm waiting for that. Viewing experience is meant to be great and it not being an OLED it'll be far brighter with no burn in.

There is no single display that is the best in everything. You will have to make decisions on what matters most to you.

The issue is that my room gets pretty bright, so my current monitor is not bright enough and I have to close my blinds.

Also I want a top tier HDR gaming experience, that is why I shortlisted those two monitors

Your current monitor's specs say it's 250 nits, so the Asus will be the same brightness for SDR content. If that's too dim for you, get the Samsung Neo G7 for plenty of brightness headroom. You will sacrafice some responsiveness and input lag (especially in HDR content when the FALD backlight is working).

G8 is to be avoided because of the scanlines ?

And just because of curiosity, what about the Ark for Gaming ?

For the G8 to work without scanlines you will have to turn down the refresh rate. In that case you could also save the money you're paying for 240Hz and get the 165Hz G7.

The Ark is a huge monster of a "monitor" and hasn't been reviewed by one of the 3 reputable reviewers i use for reference, so i can't say much about it. But i will say that 3 vertical monitors probably won't be very ergonomic to use.

It would be to use it as a single monitor

And it is the only mini led 4k 240hz on the market I guess ?

Yup Neo G8 do have scanlines but it depends on the preset you use and Samsung seems didn't bother and no new firmware release.

This scanlines issue is 1st appear in Neo G9 but latest firmware solved it as it is gone in my Neo G9 after I update the latest firmware.

But too bad until now no new firmware release by Samsung for Neo G8.

Scanlines happen at 240hz in SDR unless you use sRGB mode and not obvious in HDR for any mode.

I know it is not happened in sRGB mode as during google, many user feedback on this and I try and it do not appear if choose sRGB mode.

This is the reason I believe it can be solved but only Samsung can fixed this issue, the problem is so many months pass already and they is no single new firmware release by Samsung so far.

Scanlines definitely not happen in 120hz in SDR or HDR mode.

Last time I though is DSC issue but it was not as the scan is happened in DP 1.4 input which need DSC or HDMI 2.1 input which not required DSC.

You will not notice scanline in gaming or watching movie, it only happens in certain color and only seen in icon, or the color preset of the windows, very obvious in Microsoft Edge and also Steam icon.

The Samsung Neo G7, G8 and plenty of other monitors from other brands are MiniLED. But MiniLED itself doesn't mean anything other than a monitor with many dimming zones. But depending on the model zone count is still a wide range anywhere from a few hundred to over 2000. So "MiniLED" is not really an indicator of much.

it really just come down to oled vs mini-led. In most cases oled is bright enough. Oled has better blacks and doesnt bloom and mini-led has a wider color gamut but blooms, particular around the mouse cursor (doesnt matter if it's "mini").

Personal perference is oled for streaming shows/movies, oled for competitive gaming, and by far mini-led for non-competitive gaming.

I think the important thing is for you to see them both in person.

OLED - the best entertainment screen at the moment, I don't think any others commercial screen can compete with it, it is great for movies and gaming.

Cons - text fringing issue due to not standard RGB pixel arrangement, not good for productivity. Not good for very bright room as full screen brightness only around 250 nits or lower. May have burn-in issue but to me my 3 years LG C9 not happen so far but I only use it for movies purpose.

Mini-LED in VA - very bright and great for very bright room, near OLED black as very high contrast, 2nd best screen for movies and gaming. No text fringing issue as standard RGB pixel arrangement, great for productivity.

Cons - blooms issue on mouse cursor area when local dimming is on and look a bit shady on desktop usage, to overcome this issue, the local dimming better set auto (Neo G7/G8/G9 is out of the box set as auto) where not on in SDR mode and only auto turn on in HDR mode, this is the best setting also as windows environment looking perfect in SDR mode, by this setting, no issue on mouse cursor blooming and also no shady look, but then Windows is not auto detect SDR or HDR content, so you need to manual on off or pick the apps that can auto detect and switch in between when playing movie, for example Plex for HDCP is support this auto switch, gaming wise new games mostly support auto switch but not all. Second cons is narrow viewing angel, no issue for me as I use monitor straight view, but if you plan to put not straight or top down, then it might not suitable.

Is they any perfect monitor display tech so far? Too bad the answer is no at the moment. You just need to give and take and think which one is the best for you.
