7950X3D Memory Stability Issues

Hi, I've built a new PC about three weeks ago and have had issues with memory stability ever since.

CPU: 7950X3D

Memory: G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo DDR5 6000

Motherboard: Asus TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS WIFI

Full parts list: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/4jWRrD

The errors manifest as bluescreens on windows, kernel panics and random freezes on linux, as well as crashing applications.
Bluescreens usually have a "memory management" error message and most kernel panics are preceded by "bad page state" errors.

These errors usually show up within about an hour of turning the system on.

I also ran memtest86 lots of times with different hardware configurations, sometimes it passes, sometimes it fails seemingly at random.

The errors seem to be more common with EXPO enabled but also show up with completely stock memory settings.

On the other hand, yesterday I ran y-cruncher for 12 hours with EXPO enabled without any errors whereas the system usually fails after 20-60 minutes.

I also tried the supposedly "easy memory timings" from this buildzoid video but that was even less stable than EXPO. I realize this came out before 7000x3d was a thing, not sure how much the recommended settings would differ for these new chips.

Thinking the memory was faulty at first, I RMA'd it but the issue persisted.

By now I have completely ship-of-theseus'd the whole PC, one by one replacing not just memory (same model) but CPU (same model), motherboard (ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-A GAMING WIFI), PSU (Gigabyte P750GM), and SSD (Mushkin Vortex 2TB) with no different results.

The only part I didn't replace is the CPU cooler but temps always looked fine btw, about 40 C at idle and 60-80 under load and it isn't an electronics component so I doubt that's the issue.

The memory kit was not on the QVL of the original motherboard and vice versa, however it is on that list for the new motherboard.

I'm ran the latest BIOS version from a week or so ago on each of the boards.

I have essentially built a whole second computer for diagnosing this over multiple weeks.

I'm completely out of ideas and humbly ask for your help.

Did you try running memory at auto, just to make sure the issue is not ram related. (run everything at default/auto). Also make sure ram is located in slot a2 and b2 on the motherboard. Do not run PBO on this motherboard, it has the burning CPU issue and I can see that ASUS has released a bios limiting soc voltage to 1.3v https://www.asus.com/motherboards-components/motherboards/tuf-gaming/tuf-gaming-x670e-plus/helpdesk_bios/?model2Name=TUF-GAMING-X670E-PLUS

Sure its not motherboard?

I have the ASUS Crosshair Hero VII and had issues from Day one with ram timings with 3200Mhz ram.

Bios updates have made things better but never been 100% stable.

When I build my new system in a few weeks I will be avoiding ASUS motherboards and opting for MSI or Gigabyte instead.

I tried running the memory both with stock (auto) settings as well as EXPO.

I used the latest bios with both motherboards and I didn't touch PBO at all yet.

The memory modules are in the slots recommended in the motherboard manual

Could be, sure. But as I've said, I tested two different motherboards. I'd prefer not to have to buy a third one.

I have tried windows, linux and memtest86 which isn't based on either.

32GB DIMMs with those timings might not be stable, might be worth trying 36-36-36-76 like some of the slower but tighter memory kits.

I mean if you have really rebuilt whole PC with completely new parts and still get the same issues ..... bad  OS install? Or you are just really really unlucky with your mobo/ram combo.

I would go for a different kit of RAM if you have a way to borrow one for testing. By different i mean like completely different brand , speed .

I had issues with my system stability on AM5 considering RAM speed as well, but nothing as bad as yours.

The default/auto settings I tried were 4800 MT/s and 40-40-40-77 primary timings.

That was mostly stable but would still generate the occasional error.

I will try 6000 MT/s with the timings you suggested though

I just reset all bios settings to stock (for memory that's 4800 MT/s and 40-40-40-77 primary timings) and ran another y-cruncher stress test. System crashed after about 30 minutes. No expo involved. That’s even below the 5200 MT/s that the CPU should support.

Dude,

I have the exact same problem as you. Literally the same symptoms happening on my side...

My mobo is ASROCK X670E PRO RS.

PSU is Seasonic TX-1000W

Endorfy Navis 360 AIO on CPU

KC3000 Nvme.

Currently I have the same RAM installed as you, only the 2x16GB kit not 2x32GB - I can confirm that no settings guaranteed stability (doesn't matter if on AUTO, EXPO or Manual)

I also have spare pair of Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5-6000 CL30 (CL30-36-36-76, 1.4 V) 2x16GB (model CMH32GX5M2B6000Z30K) - and it was the same story.

My ASROCK came with BIOS 1.09 which had AMD AGESA 1.0.0.3 A.

Due to recent drama with burning 7XXX X3D CPUs, the first thing I did was upgrading BIOS to ver. 1.24.AS02 wich had this in patch notes: Update AGESA to ComboAM5 1.0.0.7 and SMU 84.79.221

I didn't try any other BIOS so I don't know if previous worked or not.

The randomness of these BSODs and freezes really doesn't allow me to troubleshoot and narrow down what can be the problem...

I can only add that the system was stable for 1 day. Installed Windows, all necessary drivers etc. I even played a quick session of Total War. The next day random BSODs started and that was it. Now I can't even reinstall Windows that was damaged due to constant freezes.

I "fixed" my issue by buying yet another motherboard. Got an MSI Tomahawk now with otherwise all the same components and it's been running stable for over a week now.

Well, glad it worked for you :).

But it's a rather costly "fix", especially that is your third one 😕

It's too late for me to return my MOBO (14 day return policy). So I will have to wait for future BIOS iterations. I'm also thinking about RMA but I'm skeptical it will change anything...

Did you sell your previous motherboards ? Or planning RMAs ?

*UPDATE*

Newest BIOS from ASROCK (1.24) that consists:

1. Update AGESA to ComboAM5 1.0.0.7a.
2. Optimize UEFI setup setting

fixed my problem.

Same memory with manual timing settings from Buildzoid YT video worked like a charm.
