Mini pcie can i improve my ssd performance

So I'm thinking of getting the best performance out of my ssd on old computers and noticed I could plug in a sata ssd to a mini pcie slot and wanted to know if it would make a difference in performance or even work

I assume that you've plugged that cable into one of these things:

This will not work. This is physically a USB port, but it's not carrying USB signals at all. It's used for a PCIe riser, and you cannot connect a USB device to this port. Besides, even if it was a proper USB port it wouldn't be any faster than connecting the drive to an external USB 3 port. For the best performance connect the SATA drive to a SATA port on your motherboard.

If you really want maximum performance out of your old computer, your best bet is to buy a PCIe x1 to M.2 NVME riser card, or if you're not using a GPU get a full PCIe x16 to M.2 NVME card.

A SATA SSD will still use SATA protocols. 

The current way most board are set up is that a PCIe connection goes to a controller of some sort which then accepts SATA drives. 
Adding in your own extra (probably less well implemented) controller via a PCIe card is more likely to reduce performance (negligibly) than to improve it (negligibly). 

 

Just plug it into SATA and be done with it.

The best option is PCIe x4 adapter for M.2 NVMe key M SSD, and a M.2 NVMe key M SSD.   
 

But you probably wouldn't be able to boot directly to the operating system, as i assume your mobo doesn't support NVMe booting.

there are couple of workarounds, but well, not all are possible sometimes.

First of all, this is not a minipcie. This is a standard PCIE x1 slot. Minipcie was used on laptop, now obsolete to M2 slots. You won't find any minipcie slot on a desktop.

 

And no, that won't work. That adapter card is for mining, it is physically USB connector, but it electrically sends PCIE signals. Your USB-SATA adapter won't talk with PCIE signals.

 

Your SATA drive apparently can only run SATA signals (duh!). Converting PCIE to USB to SATA? While there are USB adapter card can make it work, I don't think that will be faster than internal SATA.

 

To run PCIE signals, you need a drive that supports PCIE signals, or now called NVME. There are PCIE x1 to M.2 adapters, they are not expensive.

 

Only if you have a NVME M.2 drive .

M key drive will work.

B key or B+M key likely will work. But there are SATA-only M.2 drives too
