The Ryzen 5 5500 just went on a big sale at a retailer for less than $90. I’d be looking for a decent 1080p experience on as many games as possible. Would this be a good option for the low price?

absolutely. 6 core / 12 thread modern CPU!  For that price, Buy it 🙂

well, the 5600 is a MUCH better CPU, for not much more. You may be able to find a used one for even less.

That said, the 5500 isn’t awful. It’s not great, but it’s not awful.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that the 5600 is a MUCH better CPU over the 5500..  Yes it has a little leg up on the 5500 but not by much.. the 7700x or 13700k is a MUCH better CPU than the 5500. I think you are over selling the 5600 a bit.

the cache limitation cripples the 5500, for 1080p the 5600 is absolutely a much better CPU.

It is the 3600x is faster than the 5500. There is a big difference between the 2. A older zen 2 design beats a zen 3 design meant to replace it that is the difference.

It legit is the same difference in performance as a 5600 to a 7700x.

The 5600 is much better though.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Sure. But my take here is that he is asking for a 90 dollar CPU for 1080p gaming, he is not going to run a 6950xt or a 4090.  If he was he wouldn't spend 90 usd on a CPU.  Yes the 5600 is faster if paired with a fast GPU but for a 1080p experience with a 2060 Super, it will do alright.

Thanks to all for the comments. You’re right. I’m also building a better machine for someone else and this is just so I can game with them on occasion. I’m not a major gamer or anything, but love to game with them. I just want to be able to play the games they want to play and have it look decent in 1080p. I’m not getting an expensive GPU. Probably spending $250-ish and was going to go i3, but this price was excellent and the CPU seemed decent. I bought it and we’ll play it as it lies. I’m sure it will be good enough and I’ll have fun which is what’s important. The person I’m building for is getting a nice machine which they need and that was my goal. This is an afterthought at their request.

Thanks again!
