Hey guys, I've built a new gaming setup these days (after like 10+ years w/o using pc for gaming and only basic pcs for work) and one thing that made me thinking was that "Is it possible to gpu have external power suply?" I mean, not power connected to the pc psu but instead, external power suply (pretty much like monitors ps). My setup was all clean and beautiful to look at except those connectors plugged on the gpu. Is it something gpu vendors have not tried yet, nor will try to, to make it cleaner?

Sorry if its a dumb and obvious non functional idea but I really wonder why not

Compatibility. There's a project from... ASUS I believe, and I think Gigabyte has given it a shot as well, that puts all the power plugins on the backside so there's no visible cables to the motherboard or GPU. But this requires a proprietary case specifically set up for that. Normal cases don't support that config -> so very few people buy them even when said projects do actually hit the market -> product does poorly meaning little motivation to try further -> it never takes off so case manufacturers never design cases to support it.

Having an external PSU would seem neat at first, but it would defeat the point of an internal PSU to begin with.

How would a second PSU and more cables to connect it be cleaner? 🙄

Pretty sure that's backwards, Gigabyte has done it with an actual released product while ASUS has photos of it in R&D, plus MSI has one as well.

Ah, thanks 😂. I can't tell modern Gigabyte boards apart from ROG hardware, and the latest MSI boards are trending that direction too.

If I'm understanding your problem, its solution is 12VHPWR, especially the right angled adapters or native cables. 12VHPWR is far easier to manage than potentially 4x8pin comparably, though the connector is still at the top of the card. I'd like to see a 90 degree adapter/cable that rotates it towards the end of the card personally. What's cool about 12VHPWR is its a standard 1:1 cable, so any quality cable manufacturer could make whatever specialty cable they want.

EVGA's 12VHPWR graphics cards like the RTX 3090ti/Kingpin and their prototype RTX 4090 had the 12VHPWR on the end of the card, making cable management even more clean. I personally routed my 12VHPWR cable along the card to management it similarly to EVGA's solution and its wonderful. Something you can't do with 3x8pin without it being a tentacled mess.

That seems like a solution to a problem far too few people have. That's why they haven't bothered. I'd prefer to not have any external power bricks, monitors included, and just have a thicker monitor.

Thanks for replying guys. I see its for sure 'you cant please everyone'. Some do prefer internal power suply units while I rather not. For me its easier to fix an external power brick other than an internal one so I'd choose that one (regarding to monitor example) plus cooling on external being easier than internal.
As for the gpu thingie, I'm about to buy that 90º plug as it should really make setup cleaner. But I was really talking about an all external solution. A plug-in power connector that goes right next to hdmi/dp connectors leaving nothing plugged on the inside. By using an external power brick, it would give longer breath to working psu's under 600w (as it wouldnt be necessary to change a working piece just because you need more power for the gpu).
