1440p gaming GPU suggestions; Next 3-4 years!

realhoneybadger

Hey everyone! I am currently rocking the 2070super and am looking to upgrade my GPU. I game on a 1440p monitor and have no interest in gaming in 4k. (I can't tell the difference anyway. xD. Especially because I like to game on 27-inch monitor). I am planning to keep my upgraded GPU for the next 3-4 years.

I almost pulled the trigger twice. Once on a 7900xtx and once on a 4070Ti.

I backed off the 7900xtx because there are some very "mixed" review regarding the drivers scattered around internet forums, and I am really no good in fixing / tweaking drivers and stuff...

As for the 4070Ti, will 12GB of vram suffice for the next 3 years of triple A titles, gaming on 2k? I feel like the 4080 is an overkill, especially considering the price ...

If not, are there any GPUs you recommend me getting? My budget is quite flexible, but I just don't want to spend more than I have to.

Current Setup: 2k 165hz ; 5800x3d; 32GB 3600 DDR4;

Hoping to play or re-play: RDR2 / MSFS / MW2 / 2077 / Spiderman / Any other cool looking games :D!

Thank you for reading!
Cheers 🤗

7900xtx would have been what I would have gone for, but the deal is over I guess. Yes for the 4070ti, 12GB will last for the next 3 years just fine. You might not be able to max out the textures in some games, but just dropping textures to high will look 99% the same and run just fine.

Also, 1440p is NOT 2k, and never has been. 2k is 2048*1080 / 1920*1080.

Deal? What deal? I don't reside in the US. I mean I could get a 7900 xtx Gaming OC for $1,100 in my country. Are you using a 7900xtx? You find any issues with it? Are you happy with it?

I am more of a plug and play person 😄 haha!

the 7900 xtx isn't a bad card anymore and i think all the driver issues have been fixed. But wait for someone who has that card

Message me on discord (bread8669) for more help

I assumed by almost pulled the trigger you meant you had an opportunity, like a good deal.

No, im not running a 7900xtx. I just run a laptop with vega graphics.

Driver issues IMO on both sides are overblown, as they only ever show up on launch day generally and are fixed fairly rapidly.

Ohh! Nahh... both cards are still available

Gigabyte 4070ti Gaming OC - $925
Gigabyte 7900xtx Gaming OC - $1,120

I just hesitated, because I am afraid of making the wrong decision

There is no "Wrong" decision. The 7900xtx is significantly faster in rasterization. 4070ti is capable of calculating raytracing quicker (does not mean fps will be more since it still rasterizes)

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/msi-geforce-rtx-4070-ti-gaming-x/34.html

for ray tracing
relative-performance-rt_2560-1440.png

for non ray tracing

Average Gaming FPS FPS 2560x1440

So future games that use MORE raytracing like global illumination the 4070ti is likely better. Neither choice is wrong. both will last you the next 3-4 years and put a smile on your face as you play your games.

@joshualimWhat AAA games do you play?

Forgive me El Guapo. I know that I, Jefe, do not have your superior intellect and education...

I don't think I'd buy a 12GB card in your price class; I'd go 7900 XT all the way. Especially seeing my RX 6700 XT using 10.8 GB at 1440p high in The Last of Us Part 1. Would be very nervous about 12GB tomorrow becoming like 8GB today is. God I hate how cheap Nvidia is with VRAM, but they have dominant market share and know they can get their customers to buy more often if they never make another 1080 Ti again and instead gimp the VRAM. Don't think I'd touch an Nvidia card lower than the 4080. They really should have put 16GB on the 4070 Ti, then DLSS 2 plus better RT would be enough of a selling point that I'd probably take it over the 7900 XT at the same $800 price.

I've been to a few forums where owners of the RTX 3070 Ti are in denial, saying their cards are capable to 1440P gaming, and while for the most part, I'd agree, there're some exceptions. Hogwarts Legacy, Forspoken, and other newer releases have a trend of high VRAM requirement. 8GB VRAM isn't gonna hack it any more at 1440P for newer and more GPU intensive games.

Now, the next step is a 12GB card, but to me, that's kinda cutting it close, with games like those newer AAA ones eating up 10-11GB of VRAM at 1440P, it seems that 16GB VRAM is considered the 'safe' amount of VRAM for up to 1440P/4K. Other than the RTX 3090, the only newer nVidia cards to fit that are the RTX 4080/4090, but they're not cheap.

Now, let's consider AMD's offerings, the RX 6800 and up, plus the RX 7900 XT/XTX would either meet with or exceed that 16GB VRAM threshold. The RX 7900 series has brought up AMD's RX 7900XT/XTX performance to roughly even with the RTX 3080/3090 respectively, so they are capable of decent RT performance, just up to the RTX 4000 series level. For rasterize gaming, bothe AMD latest GPUs are pretty capable of very good framerate for rasterize games, as well as games with light-med RT implementation.

I have the MERC 310 RX 7900 XTX in my main rig, and a Nitro+ RX 6900 XT in my 2nd rig, and other than minor driver issues, they've been great performers in the games I play. I've been playing Dead Space Remake, COD MWII, Calisto Protocol, etc as of late, no problemo.

And to prove I ain't BS'ing, below is a pic of my main rig, using Linkup Riser cable and vertical/angled GPU mount, GPU's running at PCIe4 x16 with SAM enabled.
