Hey all, I have an Intel i7 990x, MSI X58A-GD45, Samsung 8GB X2 RAM in dual channel configuration, a HIS IceQ X2 graphics card (R9 280), a Seagate Barracuda 1000GB HDD, and an ATNG ATM-600FB power supply. I can’t get it to post. It does power on however. I’ve tried 2 different, confirmed working monitors on the correct source through both HDMI and Display Port. I’ve swapped the graphics card out with 2 other confirmed working graphics cards (RX 6500XT, GT 710). I’ve swapped out the RAM for a single 4GB stick. I've confirmed the Ramos in the correct slots and/or configuration. I have reseated the CPU, all cables, RAM, graphics cards etc. Also, the HDD is a loaner from a system just so I could get it to post (I didn’t think I needed a drive for it just to post but I’m trying everything) it has Windows 10 on it though. I have also used the CMOS reset button on the back I/O and used the jumper to clear CMOS. Nothing has worked so far. The only thing I can think of is the power supply. I would swap it out but, the only other one I have is from ANOTHER system doing the same thing! The other system is my daily driver that started to no post recently, so I may end up needing help with that one too. But, for the time being, the 990X system is the one I’m focusing on atm. Any ideas?

Do you happen to have one of these:

PC Internal Mini Onboard Speaker

To get a post code off the board? I didn't see a debug output or speaker when I searched that board unless I missed something.

I do not, and no error cod LED on the motherboard. Will that speaker work on any motherboard?

Yah, it's a generic speaker that goes on the speaker header which is standard on just about every motherboard new and old

Do you see the MSI Splash screen when you start the computer?

Remove the GPU and just use the onboard HDMI. Try it on a different monitor or TV.

If all fails, then there is a major hardware problem. Strip the computer down to the most basic to POST. (ie) 1 known good RAM stick, no GPU, no HDD/SSD and see if you can get boot into Setup (Bios).

CPU doesn’t have onboard graphics, should I still see a splash screen?

If your Video Cable, GPU and Monitor are all working and test well on another computer, then Yes, you should see the splash screen unless there is a hardware issue. You will have to diagnose each part separately. Until all that's left are the RAM and the Motherboard, then it is one of them.

Ok, I’ll try that

By Rear I/O do you mean the video output from the GPU?

Are any of the Diagnostic Debug Lights showing? (ie) CPU, DRAM, VGA? If so, that would indicate the problem.

If not, then there still is a hardware issue, you will need to take each removable part out and test on a working computer. If all parts work well, then that leaves the Motherboard. Which could have been shorted out somehow.

Motherboard I/O:

- 1 x PS/2 Keyboard port
- 1 x PS/2 Mouse port
- 1 x Clear CMOS button
- 1 x Coaxial SPDIF-out
- 1 x Optical SPDIF-out
- 1 x IEEE1394 port
- 8 x USB 2.0 ports
- 1 x eSATA port
- 1 x RJ45 LAN Jack
- 1 x 6 in 1 audio jack

Thanks for the info, unfortunately none of the LEDs on the motherboard are for troubleshooting codes. I was thinking about getting one of those speakers Lurick mentioned above. That should be able to give me codes right?

Heeyo! 😄

Crazy thought here, but something i learned fairly recently:

Certain motherboards decide to not boot when the cmos batettery is dead/empty.

Do you have a spare cmos battery laying around by chance?

Its definitely worth the try to see if it decides to post, after replacing the cmos battery.

This was the case with the motherboard of my father.

Damn that’s a good idea! I don’t have any spares lying around but, I’ll buy a pack today and try that. Thanks for the suggestion!
