CPU compatibility and BIOS opdate

Hey guys!

I'm quite new with servers but I wanted to have fun and poke around with a home server. I got an oldIBM x3550 M2 7946. I bought a replacement fan and a couple of things to upgrade it. Today I tried to change the CPUs from Xeon E5502 to Xeon X5690. I checked before I bought it to make sure it fit in the socket but I did not check to see if it was officially supported. I did the swap and I get no display. I haven't been able to find a specific list and it's possible it is supported but the BIOS is too old. As the last BIOS updater I found was from 2011 and all the links and FTP server to download it are broken or closed, I haven't been able to test or update it. Let me know if you have any insight!

Thanks for your help. Here is what I have found of interest in the pdf you linked. The last CPU listed is the x5570. Does that confirm that the CPUs are in fact not compatible or is the problem something else?

Not compatible. One is Nehalem one is westmere. Both different architectures.
