Hi!

Wondering if I can pick any networking peoples brain.

Apologize in advance if I sound extremely green.

I am trying to understand what is a leased line.

I understand its essentially a dedicated line to do what ever I want with it.

But is it just the physical cable and link from point A to point B?

So what I am trying to do is, I found a company that has fibre running through my community.

They are a service provider. But they dont service our community with fibre.

So what I want to do is purchase a fibre connection then redistribute it my self in my community.

When I was doing some reasearch, it appears what I needed is a leased line.

Part of what I dont understand is do I need my own equipment at the other end for routing and switching?

thanks!

To become your own ISP, you primarily need a fast connection to one or more other ISPs. And you should read up on laws and regulations concerning ISPs in your area. If you have no technical expertise in networking you're probably better of hiring people who do, before you try operating your own ISP.

Oh boy. I don't think you understand the pain a suffering you're asking for.

Firstly this is not as simple as connected to a provider via a Fiber line and providing service. You most likely would need to come to an agreement with the said provider for things like Link Speed between you and them, and how much bandwidth you intend to use. Further more every customer will need an IP address unless you intend to do carrier grade NAT.

Also how do you plan on running service to peoples homes? You likely will have to pull permits from the local government or country government. If you intend has running lines on Utility poles you may be responsible for rent, yes utility poles are generally owned by someone, in my area if power lines are on them they are owned by DTE. If you intend on putting the cables underground then you're having to deal with the utility locator service and having to wait for things to be marked as well as im sure there is some government oversight on that.

What kind of service are you installing? Fiber? Regardless you are going to need to buy expensive ish equipment. You will need to learn how to configure said equipment. You also have to provide installation and tech support for your customers. It's not easy to start an ISP, if it was there would be more competition. While private citizens have done this, for example the guy in Michigan who did this. In his case, he worked for one of the major back bone providers across the internet. He understood how the internet functions and as he was an engineer he knew how to design a network.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
