Hi, I am building a rig with a large budget and though I had everything down and am in the last stages of buying the parts but I have a few questions first

Should I use 4770k or a xeon?

Whats the over clocking like on a Xeon?

I am going to buy the asrock killer z87 board and am wondering if I will be able to use the has well refresh that coming out and should I get a z97 board

Thanks in advance

All xeons are locked and cannot be overclocked. Most xeons are equivalent to i7 sans the igpu. Xeons do not perform as well as i7 4770K in games. Most Z87 Motherboard do not support Xeons.

a xeon wont overclock, apart from those few FSB megahertz

refresh possibly. broadwell no... just get a z97 board, if nothing else for the new features and ability to pgrade later

Most Z87 Motherboard do not support Xeons.

Are you sure about this? If you're talking about the Xeon E7s and E5s then of course they're not supported but if you're referring to the Xeon E3-1200 series I'm not quite sure that's quite correct.

It is correct that E3 1200 Series Xeons are LGA1150 and should be able to work with all Chipset, but that is not true. Only a select few Motherboards support Xeons. As they are meant for workstations ~ they are commonly supported by Q87, Q/B 85 chipset based motherboards.

xeon cant be overclocked (unless its a way older generation), i7 can be overclocked tho. and xeon has turbo boost 2.0 which is somewhat like overclocked speeds on i7

xeon has enough horse power over i7 on any day, most probably you wont need an overclocking on a xeon processor to get most out of its perfomance anyways in the first place..

Most 1150 motherboards support it. If you go to the motherboard manufacturers page and look at a list of compatible CPUs, you will most likely see Xeons in that list

Xeons are more suited for workstation/server grade use that require lower clocks but more cores, while the 4770k is a consumer grade processor.

What is the system being used for anyways?

This+

If you're not building workstation/server you should stick with 4770k.

Would this (http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=23562) motherboard support the Xeon E3-1230 v3 CPU? I tried to find the CPU compatible list on Gigabytes site but didn't have any luck. :(

I am going to be doing some gaming on it but mostly I am going to be setting up virtual labs and doing Photoshop and video rendering
