New build for friend's son's 16th Birthday

Budget (including currency): 1000 GBP

Country: UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming and school work

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Will be using a 24" 1080p 60Hz Monitor.  Peripherals are coming from other family members.

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/shBHH2

This is what I've put together.  I know i'm kinda over egging the CPU a bit but i want that part to last at least 5-6 years for them so I'm thinking spend the money on that now and save on the GPU cause that'll most likely be the first thing replaced/upgraded in a few years.  Like it says I've recommended  a 24" 1080p 60Hz display for starters but again.  the big CPU could go faster if they decide to spends a little more on a high refresh.

Thoughts?

Edit** Updated link as hadn't added any storage

With all the Trolls, Try Hards, Noobs and Weirdos around here you'd think i'd find SOMEWHERE to fit in!

It's ok, but get a beefier 750W+ CPU, this should be the longest living part of the build

With that budget i would got for AM4. Especially for 1080p.

DDR5 prices are coming down, but the motherboards still cost a fortune for no real benefits.

Even old DDR3 systems lasted half a decade among the top tier systems, and i am expecting the same to happen here.

I went a bit differently.

Basically I changed things out so the only ugprade would need to be the gpu in the future and nothing else.

Hence the more ram, bigger psu and 1tb ssd storage directly (the wd green drives are really bad and 240gb is very small) also newest games on hdds aren't doing so well :p.

I went with intel to stay in price and really the 13400 is no slouch.

Keep in mind you have 2 different rgb softwares here too so I actually want to simply recommend a air cooler like a ak400 to keep things simpler in terms of rgb.

This system seems great to me. Only thing i would change is the AIO into air cooled one. 13400F doesn't need water cooling. Water cooling is at that performance range is just more hassle for no benefits imo. Especially if it's build for someone who's not going to tinker with it. AIO pump might die few years in, while the air cooler probably won't.

Otherwise agreed.

With this in mind, +1. GPU prices sucked in UK this month, holy shit.

All good suggestions, here's my spin on it.

  • AM5 in theory could be a better investment long-term, meaning upgrade paths down the road should be better but because of it they are asking a higher price tag. Intel on the other hand has a cheaper entry fee.
  • Graphics cards, fan and PSU prices are through the roof in the UK so we gotta see where we can save, again on the entry fee.

Here's the build.

Things to note.

Picked a smaller ak400 model air cooler. Should be fine. If not, bigger ak620 brother beats many 240mm AIO's while costing the same or less.

Basic default 1TB SSD. This is not enough for me personally but should be fine for most 16y olds...? Minecraft, Warzone, FIFA... that's like what, 250GB?

6600XT is only gets a tad bit more frames, single digit more than a 5700XT. The 5700XT card holds very well till this day and is worth the £50 savings to get 95fps instead of 100fps in the latest Forza. Maybe even check used sellers like CEX? They even gave a 2 year warranty on used PC parts.

Case is somewhat pricy, until you see it comes with all the fans included, which looking at fans right now, is arguably a good saving.

PSU's tho... there's like barely any left for some reason, and the ones that are, are the top end models.

With £120 savings, maybe some of it could go towards some RGB bling.

Good luck but I would throw in a new monitor, my preference is 27'' 1080p 144hz at a minimum for 2023.

Desktop: Ryzen 7 5800X3D - Kraken X62 Rev 2 - STRIX X470-I - 3600MHz 32GB Kingston Fury - 250GB 970 Evo boot - 2x 500GB 860 Evo - 1TB P3 - 4TB HDD - RX6800 - RMx 750 W 80+ Gold - Manta - Silent Wings Pro 4's enjoyer

SetupZowie XL2740 27.0" 240hz - Roccat Burt Pro Corsair K70 LUX browns - PC38X - Mackie CR5X's

Current build on PCPartPicker
