So I just received all the parts for my new computer and decided to make a quick testbench on my motherboard box before installing everything. All I had plugged was my motherboard (Asus Z87-A ATX), my CPU, my CPU fan, my RAM and my graphic card (GTX 770). I connected everything to my power supply (EVGA NEX750B) but as I am a beginner I made a mistake and I plugged the VGA1 8 pin-connector in the CPU power 8 pin connector. When I opened it, everything worked for 2 seconds. Then, a crack noise and everything stopped. Also smoke came out of the power supply.

I just want to know if my other parts are ok. Or do I need to change all my parts that were connected?

You probably need to change your psu...

That shouldn't happen. Best if you try a different psu. Even a 300 Watt will do for a quick test boot without the 770.

Edit: How was that even possible, it looks like the connections have different forms ( round/square).

You sir have just made the #1 mistake in computer building. RMA your PSU.

It cracked because the pinout is different for the VGA and the CPU power plug, for example negative is where positive should be so in other words you screwed yourself over.

How did you even manage that? The EPS and PCI power 8pin connectors have different shapes!

It's really a gamble if anything else is broken or not. It really depends where the power went before the PSU cut out. Best case - just the PSU is fried. Worst case - EVERYTHING is dead.

I don't have another power supply so I'll have to wait for the new one! But you think all my other parts are ok?

In my experience it's a crap shoot and you won't know for sure until you get the new PSU in.... Just a bad situation...

Yes the CPU 8-pin power connector is made of two 4 pins connectors and the VGA1 is a 6+2 connector

Even I won't make that mistake when I build my first PC here very soon. You should have checked everything before you turned it on for the first time. All the cables are clearly labeled. Silly noob.

That PSU is either a piece of sh*t or older than me... Return it and buy a quality one and pray to God everything still works.

EDIT: It's an EVGA PSU right? They really fucked up if you managed to plug the VGA power into your mobo, right a letter of complaint!

Where do bad folks go when they die?

They go to the lake of fire and fry, Won't see them again 'till the fourth of July
