6700XT for Plex Media Server?

Hello!

 

First of all, I apologize if this was asked before, but

 

will the 6700XT work with Plex? I know Nvidia are the power houses and work best but I do have a 6700xt spare. Would it work in 1080p and stable? I apologize just starting in plex

The 6700xt is about 4bazillion times more power than Plex needs.  I use a 1050Ti and it's overkill.

That depends entirely on what your needs are, as Plex surely only uses the video decoding/encoding engine so its more a limit on how many streams it can handle at the same time and what quality you want them at.  So a newer but lower-end GPU is likely to be better than an older higher-end in that case.

 

If all your clients can view the content without transcoding at all, you don't need a GPU.  If all you need is audio transcoding, that's done on the CPU.

Its overkill unless your Plex server is supporting a lot of clients.

 

Also as a heads up Plex officially supports Intel Quicksync and Nvidia transcoding. You can transcode with AMD cards but they don't have the same level of support right now.

 

I just bought a used Nvidia M2000 Quadro cheap off eBay and called it a day. But if you already have the card throw it in and go for it.
