Headphone Mic not working

I have headphones that said they would have a working mic but only the audio works but not the mic. Ive tried connecting it to my monitor, the audio jack on the front of my pc and the audio jack on my motherboard. I even bought a audio splitter and connected the red jack that had a microphone symbol on it to the audio red jack on my motherboard and vice versa with my green audio jack but it still wont work!!! Please help I want to stop using a laptop for my microphone.

what headphones are they? what splitter? more context here could be useful. with the splitter connected(which you will need unless your case has a mic/headset combined port), check to see if it is listed under "input" in settings/system/sound.
