Migration from 2004 PC into Semi post 2014 pc

Syme89

Upgrading my dads pc from Pentium 4 with HT vista install onto a 1st gen i3/i5 with SSD.

First step appears to have worked the mechanical drive has mirrored onto the SSD.

However when i install that drive onto the i3/i5 machine vista load screen comes on for a second followed by a beep and a restart!

I get the feeling that this is most likely a drive issue espescially with the systems being so different architechturally.

The old pc's psu is dead and considering the hdd is a mechanical IDE Ribbon Drive and has a AGP port the upgrade is definitely needed.

Concerns there is some licence software etc. on the old pc that we have lost the licence keys to since and wish to bring over all the activations etc.

Do i just need to preload the new pc's drivers or is something else going on?

go into the bios and check what mode your sata port is operating in.
you should have ahci or ide or maybe raid, chose ide.
if it still does not boot, you will have to manually inject the drivers for the new harddisk controller using a vista install cd and choosing rescue mode when booting from that.
From there though idk how to inject drivers I forgot since I last did it.

Windows simply cannot handle this move it's way too much even safe mode will crash.

Yeah i'm finding it a struggle i'm jumping largen stages in technology

  • IDE -> Sata
  • HDD -> SSD
  • Pentium 4 -> i3

There must be some hack though to get it to work e.g. fresh install of vista and then certain registry keys and transfer of file to carry over licences and keys etc.?

i mean i don't have a vista disk 😕

There are license key finder programs.
