Activity trackers

Donut417

Long story short because we unknowingly bought my mom's Fitbit Charge 5 from an "unauthorized" seller they will not honor the warranty on her device. The device in question refuses to sync with her iPhone 13 mini. Fitbit tech support determined it was an issue with the charge 5.

So she's going to buy the next device at Walmart. But Im not sure I want her to give them bastards any more money. The issue is the data. Is there any way to export the data from the Fitbit app?  Preferably in to another ecosystem, but I suppose the raw data could be fine. The reason being my mom had some heart issues over the last part of last year, she had to have stents put in and she wants to keep the fitness data to show her cardiologist.

Also if she can export the data any recommendations that can be found at a local store such as Walmart or BestBuy? Otherwise she has to give Fitbit more money.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Actual apple watch. She doesnt need to go up to series 8 really, Series 5-7 is still pretty damn nice thing to have. Their heart and exercise tracking is practically unmatched in mainstream market imho.

But can she get her Fitbit data on to the Apple Watch?

Ok first Apple Watch isn’t where the data is, that is the apple health app.

Fitbit being google isn’t friendly with apple.

there are 3rd party apps that sync the data from fit it to apple health apparently.

apple watch has more benefits since you get music and volume control on the watch as well and notifications. Even maps navigation while driving or walking. It vibrates differently for left and right so you don’t have to look at it.

My mom won’t use any other benefits. She doesn’t use her iPhone for music, she doesn’t drive. This will only be used for health purposes.

Now THAT is innovatiom!  Absolutelt incredible!  You could be totally blind, follow a walking path and know how to get from a to b, with just a couple vibrations, I'm so amazed by this!

Also, screw fitbit, android, chrome, etc.  Google creating their digital accounts for schools is downright disturbing to me.  We really need to figure out how to not support Google so much.

It's getting way out of hand.

Windows 11 will just force business to "recycle" "obscolete" hardware.  Microsoft definitely isn't bothered by this at all, and seems to want hardware produced just a few years ago to be considered obsolete.  They have also not shown any interest nor has any other company in a similar financial position, to help increase tech recycling whatsoever.  Windows 12 might be cloud-based and be a monthly or yearly fee.

Just get f.lux [Link removed due to forum rules] so your screen isn't bright white at night, a golden orange in place of stark 6500K bluish white.

released in 2008 and still being improved.

Dark Reader addon for webpages.  Pick any color you want for both background and text (background and foreground page elements).  Enable the preview mode on desktop for Firefox and Chrome addon, by clicking the dark reader addon settings, Choose dev tools amd click preview mode.

NoScript or EFF's privacy badger addons can block many scripts and websites that would load and track you, possibly halving page load time!

F-droid is a place to install open-source software for android, Antennapod, RethinkDNS, Fennec which is Firefox with about:config, lots of performance and other changes available, mozilla KB has a huge database of what most of the settings do.  Most software in the repository only requires Android 5 and 6!

I recommend firewall apps (blocks apps) and dns filters (redirect all dns requests on android, to your choice of dns, even if overridden).  RethinkDNS is my pick and I set it to use pi-hole, installed inside Ubuntu/Debian, which is inside Virtualbox, until I go to a website, nothing at all connects to any other server.  I also use NextDNS.io to do the same when away from home wi-fi or even cellular!  I can even tether from cellular to any device sharing via wi-fi, and block anything with dns set to NextDNS, regardless if the device allows changing dns.  This style of network filtration is being overridden by software updates on some devices, forcing a backup dns provuder, such as google dns, when built in dns requests are not connecting.  Without a complete firewall setup, dns redirection itself is no longer always effective.

Except not sure you can set the map without seeing screen.

The siri command is

"navigate" destination.  I don't have either devices, but knowing how much detail Apple puts into their software, seems like it would work.

Then it really won’t matter what you get.

the only benefit left is the Apple Watch can be cellular and standalone.

that and if you are iPhone user the fall and alert detection can call you etc.

downside is battery life is change every night or it don’t work.

Yeah none of the benefits will be used. Cellular connected would mean Id have to pay more money to T Mobile, and Im already paying $163 a month for 3 lines that also includes insurance on all the devices.

Looking at the Charge 5, it was a $150 device, my mom does those shopping apps like Ibotta and earns gift cards. She only paid like $25 for the Fitbit due to the gift cards. I looked at the GPS/Bluetooth version of the Apple Watch SE and it's probably more than she would want to spend. My issue is I dont know what's out there in terms of devices. AND the fact she wants to retain all the data. So Im guessing we will probably just have to give those bastards money.

Im not sure if Fitbit violated the law, part of me wants to file a complaint with the FTC and see what happens but it's probably not worth the time.

Just a little update. So my mom told me that Fitbit was bought out by Google. So this explains a lot. Anyway, there is some issue with the app, some kind of bug and she is going to wait to see if a patch helps. I dont hold high hopes. My sister suggested to her to get an Apple Watch. The issue is she set a price limit of $200. I might talk to my sister and dad about going in on the Apple Watch SE for $249.

But what other companies make fitness trackers just so I can take a look those as well? Im pretty sure Garmin make something, just not sure who's out in that space.
