GPU in chipset slot?

Go to solution Solved by Levent,

yeah its fine.

Okay. STOP. I KNOW you're slamming the keys to say 'PeRfOrMaNcE wIlL sUfFeR!', but hold your horses.

I've got a Haswell Xeon system, it has an H97 chipset. I've got a PCIE 3.0 16X slot, and a 4X PCIE version 1 slot. I want to hook a 10GbE card up, but to get full speed, I will need to have PCIE 2.0 4X available. Which isn't possible, unless I move my GPU into the slower gen 1 slot, and use the GPU slot for the NIC.

Will this work? I just need the ability to play youtube videos and get basic screen functions, I don't need to play games or run complicated rendering projects on the GPU.

And before anyone suggests using the onboard VGA, there isn't onboard VGA. It's literally fused off on the Xeon chips. So nope.

Thanks for the fast replies. I'll do a little swappy swapping later tonight, once I get the feeling back in my fingers and toes (it's cold here right now). o.x

Small update: I finally got around to doing this, have been dealing with real life crap.

The system was very not happy to boot at first, I swapped the GPU down into the lower slot and attempted to power it on. It did go to Windows. I shut it down, and installed my 10GbE NIC, and it started bootlooping. I shut it off, and tried booting again, and it booted just fine.

A little worried, the GPU is pretty close to the PSU, but I think there's enough room and the temps are reasonable. Runs just fine, otherwise. I do have 10GbE now, so that is good, time to get the new machine built so I can start moving my files over. o.x Thanks again for the fast replies.
