Hello everyone,

so I would like to convert my Mini PC into a mini server.

It will be mainly for music, torrents and streaming movies etc.

I'm not sure what to install.

AMD 3200G

AsRock X300 barebones

2x4GB

You could install True nas core. Or if it has windows you could just host a file share.

But can I access it from other devices too for example my tablet or phone? Asking mainly about sharing music files.

That is what file sharing is Why wouldn't you able to access the files. Both will allow you to access files on your local network

If it already has a Windows license, you can just do all that with Windows.

I think TrueNAS Scale has a lower barrier to entry, since it can use a slew of canned application containers.

Dell owns my soul.

I don't want to use windows for such things, only using it because of games.

Yeah I was looking into things and I think I would like to use containers instead of a whole system dedicated to do 1 thing.

As I was considering using Docker with NAS, then also Home Assistant with Docker etc. this would ensure the system isn't being touched directly by anything.

I would advise against home assistant in docker. It can work, but I have had much better experience with it running in a VM running their full OS.

Whatever you pick (truenas scale, unraid, any linux distro) you would be able to run VM’s which especially for home assistant is a good idea.

Also… docker still requires a host OS, so you still need to decide what host you want to use.
