Smelly perfboards

Hey you all,

 

I have ordered quite some perfboards from AliExpress like I have done before. Because I am a cheap shit and do not need more I went for the impregnated paper ones, like always. With all my shipment before they smelled a bit, but just for a few weeks and not so much that the whole room smelled. Now with the new ones the whole room smells kinda like phenol and something else (I haven't worked with formaldehyde in a long time so I don't think I would recognize the smell, but it might well be formaldehyde).

Now to my questions to you:

Is that kind of normal and I was just lucky before?

Does the smell go away when I leave them out for some time?

Yeah ... it could go away to some degree if you leave them outside for at least a day with lots of air to go around them (i mean don't keep them stacked, leave some space between each board for air to move around), but they'll always smell a bit

Okay, I'll try that.

 

I was just a bit shocked, because I'm a chemical engineer and they smell so much of phenol (and possibly formaldehyde) that I would put them under a fume hood right away when I would have had them in the lab. I guess I put them outside for a day and then leave them in my basement for a few weeks.
