What Do You Expect From Devil's Canyon?

Go to solution Solved by Glenwing,

It's Haswell again, with thermal paste that isn't quite as shitty as the other thermal paste.  As an enthusiast I feel so loved.

Oh and I have to get a new motherboard.  But at least I'll finally be able to take advantage of all those SATA Express and M.2 SSDs I see all over the place.

Intel recently announced their plans for a Haswell refresh, and more interestingly for us, a line of "Devil's Canyon" enthusiast CPU's in Q2. The main difference that has been confirmed is an improved TIM. I'm wondering what the speculation and "general attitude" towards devil's canyon is. What do you think the branding of Devil's Canyon says about Intel's attitude towards enthusiasts? Do you think Intel will do anything outside of the box even though they're butchering AMD in the high-end?

Haswell - DC upgrade is probably pointless. But if you're buying new, it might be worth it, given not too much of a price difference.

since I am running and overclocked 4930k, I know it wouldn't be worth it for me, in fact it will probably be what ever ends up coming out after x99 that I upgrade to, heck I felt like the 740qm in my laptop was almost not worth upgrading from if it wasn't for the heavily outdated 460m gpu in it that was begging to struggle with some of the more demanding games, I would still just be using it. Plus I just wanted to build my own desktop. Now the building bug has bitten me and I want to build another one.

I would only upgrade if it was compatible with my Z87 Asus ROG Formula mobo (most sources point to the locked chips being compatible but not the K series). And on the proviso that people were seeing temp drops with the improved TIM and correspondingly a bit more OC headroom.

Did not exactly luck out on the silicon lottery with my current 4770K, even with decent open loop water cooling I dont really bother pushing much beyond 4.5ghz as just to get to 4.7 I need to give it a ridiculous amount of voltage to get it completely stable. Would have been nice to be able to sell my 4770k and purchase what was essentially a higher binned chip with better TIM that I could try continue to chase the illusive 5ghz dragon with...

I wish I could be excited because I think I'm one of those people who want the newest things just cause they're new, but the rational side of my brain is saying "uhhh the 3570k is still an utterly fantastic CPU, and will last me quite a while"   (someone correct me if I'm wrong though)

For me no. my 3930k's a gift from my wife I gotta milk out more from it before I upgrade to anything. most likely those that comes out after x99

and I'm not expecting much performance increase. but I do expect something that comes after that gen.

Live your life like a dream.

I seriously NEED to buy an unlocked Pentium. It's the 20th anniversary of the most well-known CPU of all time. That and I want to boast to my friends how far I can overclock it...

I might even sell the mobo, CPU and case from my LAN rig and use the rest for a water-cooled Pentium K build.

How excited for Devil's Canyon are you?

I picked "moderately". I am not really intressted in it since its not a big jump from Z87, and its not worth to upgrade for me, X99 is the real powa!!

What kind of performance gains do you expect between Haswell and Devil's Canyon?

I dont expect so much more over z87, When sata express comes out, then maybe it will be better. So i picked "Minimal"

Do you think the marketing of Devil's Canyon implies a new attitude towards enthusiasts?

I picked "Maybe". Intel said that they changed the toothpaste under the IHS, so OC will be better, hope its true. Maybe that Sata express will be a succses too when the HDDs comes out to it:D

Would you upgrade to Devil's Canyon?

No, I think these new mobos and CPUs are only prototypes. I see them as that.

The real things will come Q4 this year. Newer Z97 mobos, Broadwell CPUs. Thats the final product. Todays Z97 gave sata express? but for what? nothing, Maybe in Q4s Z97 mobos will have faster sata express or something:D
