Work/Programming Laptop

I checked the several most recent pages of posts and did not see anything relevant, so I made an account to ask my question myself.

 

I have a new job at my old (and now new) boss's industrial software startup. I'm his first employee and he plans on keeping it that way for at least a year or two. He wants me to pick out a laptop to use exclusively for work purposes. I won't be able to build my own or opt for a desktop; it has got to be an off-the-shelf prebuilt laptop. I don't want him to waste his money, and I don't want to have a bad time working, but I don't have much of a clue about tried-and-true options. There's so much fluff and shill out there, I figured asking a real person (especially fans of Linus's) would be my best shot at getting reliable quality recommendations.

 

The requirements:

  • Great (fast, reliable, robust performance-wise, computationally robust) for the purposes in mind:
    • Coding, compiling, and running programs with interactive multi-windowed real-time user input interfaces. Beauty is not a priority w/r/t graphics, but they might still be computationally intensive. And to be clear, this is both front-end and somewhat back-end programming.
      • lots of VS/VSC
      • lots of C# in .NET
      • significant amounts of C++
      • some MATLAB
      • Windows terminal would be mighty handy
      • routinely interacting with private remote servers
      • interfacing with plenty of external devices
        • minimum 3-4 USB ports, preferably including at least one USB3 port
        • HDMI or whatever for a monitor
        • and not sure what other ports I will need so the more the merrier
    • Standard office software and collaboration tools
    • Internet browsing (potentially plenty of open tabs)
  • Security is key; it's the whole point of getting a totally new laptop. Boss is very anxious about corporate espionage and our ideas getting out in the open in general; first-mover advantage is critical to his business model. I heard some (all?) manufacturers started to include inaccessible black box spyware components a few years ago. Those same people might be among the most most interested in stealing our stuff, so if there is any way to avoid that for sure apart from a virtual machine, please let me know.
  • Totally new, never used, untouched
  • Of course, price
  • General/physical robustness, reliability, lifetime; won't crash mid-coding or have any other significant issues even after a few years of not-so-physically-careful use

Of purely secondary importance (only consider these after the first list is totally covered, if ever):

  • power efficiency
  • battery life
  • battery lifetime
  • small enough to fit in a reasonably sized backpack
  • A nice built-in keyboard, in case I don't have my own on hand
  • weight

All new platforms have an inaccessible "Black Box", be it Intel's ME or AMD's PSP.

 

I use a Lenovo P15s at work, I highly reccomend avoiding the "power-optimized" U-class for this type of work, which is what I'm stuck with.

Macbook pro and call it a day. There really isn't much competition given what you are looking for. It will have superior battery life, standby life, security, size, keyboard, and USB C for extended peripheral support (with an adapter of course).

Too bad, Macbooks do a LOT really well.

 

But hey, everyone has their preferences.

 

Depending where you live and how the prices are in your country, take a look at "business" Notebooks.

HP Elitebook 845 G9 is pretty damn awesome.
Comes with Ryzen 6000 (6 or 8 cores), good ports, good build quality, good support (for not much money you can even buy better premium service, out of the box you get 3 years warranty). And great batterylife.
Really special on this one: One of the only 14" Laptops left with 2 Ram Slots, even DDR5. Also, despite having AMD Chips, you get USB4 with full 40 Gbit/s. It's basicly Thunderbolt 3, so you can use all the docking stations you want.
And finally 16:10 Display.

 

Just be wary of the Display, there are 3 options:

1. 250 nits, 60% sRGB. Trash, ignore this. This Display should not exist in a 1000 buck+ laptop.

2. 400 nits, 100% sRGB. Take This one!!

3. 1000 nits, 100% sRGB, Sure View. Take this ONLY, if you sue trains and need to make sure, nobody peeps at what you do. This makes viewing angles HORRIBLIE. Way below TN levels. It needs 1000 nits to "fight" through this privacy feature. Image quality will be horrbile.

 

Business Laptops usually have some security features, Windows Pro with bitlocker support etc. One of the Reasons many companys use business laptops.

I work in Engineering and do basic programming, but otherwise push my little U-series very hard. The P15s is a sturdy, lightweight laptop, but I always saw the P15 as a better value for me (Though I never had a choice in what laptop I got.)

Why though? A typical user would never run into anything they could tell meaningful differences from. If you had a valid reason I could understand but when you say you would go insane it just highlights a lack of understanding in the area. If anything windows is more frustrating especially on laptops The trackpads and power management makes most windows laptops non viable if you depend on them daily for work.

Curious why the boss is anti desktop. Do you plan on taking work home? An 12100 based desktop costs less than $600 and will smoke most performance laptops out there and not be in a an E-waste pile in 5 years.
